Sailfish Comeback Falls Short at ERAU

Box Score DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball team traveled north to Embry-Riddle on Friday night.

The Sailfish (5-5, 0-3 SSC) opened the match with a pair of tough losses in the first two sets of action. PBA refused to go away without a fight, taking the third set 25-22 to stay alive. Unfortunately for the 'Fish, they failed to complete the comeback. ERAU (9-2, 2-0 SSC) secured the 3-1 victory by taking the fourth set, 25-14.

Abbie Zylstra led PBA with 11 kills and tied a team-best nine digs. Kayla Matthews had 10 kills and nine digs of her own. Kaileigh Ammons had seven kills in the middle with a team-high .375 hitting percentage, four blocks, and three aces. Jayden Otto finished with 35 assists with nine digs and a team-best five blocks. Lauren Cummings recorded nine digs as the libero. PBA was outhit in the match, .113-.263. 

The Eagles took an early 10-5 lead in the first set, but the Sailfish battled back with an ace and a kill by Ammons along with a block by Anna Gregerson which helped cut the deficit to one point. Most of the set was neck-and-neck until the final few points. ERAU led 19-18, and a PBA service error and a pair of Eagles' blocks helped the hosts seize momentum. ERAU ended the set on a 6-2 run, winning 25-21.

PBA held the upper hand early in the second set. The Sailfish held two different four-point leads, but the Eagles worked their way back into the match each time. A kill from the Eagles capped off a 4-0 run which tied the set at 14. The teams traded points until later in the set when ERAU pulled away with a 23-20 lead. PBA battled back and tied the set at 23 following a kill from Ammons and a pair of kills by Zylstra. The Sailfish comeback attempt fell short as a kill from ERAU and an error by the 'Fish allowed the Eagles to take the second set, 25-23.

The Sailfish began to click in the third set. PBA jumped out to a quick 9-1 lead, including three kills from Zylstra, a kill by Gregerson, and an ace from Matthews. The Eagles worked themselves back to retake the lead, 14-13. With the set tied at 17, PBA pulled away again thanks to a kill by Gregerson and three errors by the Eagles. PBA held on to win the set 25-22, capped off by a kill from Mary Morgan Formby.

ERAU jumped out to an early lead that the Sailfish could not recover from. ERAU hit a match-best .480 in the set. The Eagles clinched the match with a convincing 25-14 win in the fourth set.

The Sailfish look to bounce back on Saturday when they face Rollins. The match in Winter Park, Fla. takes place at 4 p.m.
