MIAMI SHORES, FLA - The Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball team played its second match in two days today as they hit the road to face the Barry Buccaneers. The Sailfish fell in three sets to their Sunshine State Conference foes to drop to 5-4 overall and 0-2 in SSC play against a perfect Barry side that moves to 9-0 on the year.
After the Sailfish played in front of a raucous crowd at home yesterday, the two sides played a back-and-forth opening set with each side having a lead until the two sides were tied at 11. From there, the Bucs went in a 3-0 run and never trailed again in the first as they went on to win it 25-19.
Mary Morgan Formby and
Anna Gregerson were the most efficient hitters for the Sailfish in the opening set as they each had a pair of kills early.Â
The Sailfish started out the second set slowly as the Bucs led by as many as seven points. A late Sailfish rally where PBA won five straight points was put to bed and the Bucs went on the take the second-straight set by a score of 25-19.
Down 2-0 and in need of a set win to extend the match, PBA battled in the third as neither side was able to get ahead by more than three points until a small Barry run that made it 21-17.
Kayla Matthews was active in the third set as she finished the match with six kills. A pair of
Kaileigh Ammons kills late for the Sailfish middle brought the Sailfish close late, but it was the Bucs who outhit the 'Fish throughout to win the decisive set 25-21.
Outside hitter
Abbie Zylstra led the Sailfish in kills with seven and was PBA's third most efficient hitter at .278 behind Gregerson who had five kills and .400 Formby who had four kills, hitting .375.
Jayden Otto continued to be the setter for the Sailfish throughout the match and led the way with 29 assists. Zylstra and libero
Jayna Bredenberg led the 'Fish in digs with six a piece. Overall, Barry outhit the Sailfish .268 to .126 and out-blocked PBA 10-6 in a match that was close throughout.
The Sailfish are back in action on Sep. 16 and 17 when they continue SSC play at Embry-Riddle and Rollins.
