MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic baseball team headed south for a midweek non-conference game against the Barry Buccaneers tonight. The Sailfish looked like they were in control for much of the game, but the Bucs rallied with three runs in the ninth inning to walk off in a 6-5 victory. The defeat drops the PBA record to 6-5 early on the season.
The Sailfish gave the ball to
Ethan Petric who made his second start of the season. Petric was dominant for six innings of work for PBA as he fanned 10 Barry batters. He got out of trouble unscathed in the second inning after allowing two singles before surrendering an unearned run in the fourth inning. After the run, Petric bounced back by striking out the side to end the fourth.Â
Offensively, the 'Fish were held down until they broke out in the top of the fifth inning.
Jake Roper was hit by a pitch and
Sean Houck drew a walk to start the rally. Roper would come home on a wild pitch to level the score at one before
Jiovel Lantigua brought home Houck on a double to left-center field. With two outs,
Matthew Faranda hit a ball in the hole to the second baseman which brought home
Dylan Tosto.
Petric shut down the Bucs in the bottom of the sixth after 87 pitches to end his day finishing with 10 strikeouts while allowing six hits and just the one earned run. Petric's case for a win looked even better after the Sailfish added two more runs in the top of the seventh. The Sailfish took advantage of Barry defensive mistakes when two throwing errors on a Faranda grounder to first base plated
Jeff Manto and
Sean Williams.Â
Up 5-1, the Sailfish went to the bullpen and turned to lefty
Ryan Webster. After a recording one out on the first three batters faced and then an error to load the bases, Barry brought in one run on a bases loaded walk to end Webster's night. Christan Horner was the next man up and he did good work to get two ground balls and get out of the inning without allowing any more damage after entering with the bases loaded. The Bucs added one more run in the eighth inning charged to Horner after
Andrew Sieczkowski came in with two men on and no one out.Â
Despite the heavy amount of traffic on the bases late, the Sailfish entered the bottom of the ninth up 5-3. The Sailfish surrendered two walks to lead off the inning and
David Chenoweth was brought in to get out of the jam. He went on to hit the first batter he faced to load the bases with no one out. Two singles to left field by the following two batters brought in three runs as Barry walked it off in the ninth 6-5.
Barry outhit the Sailfish ten to five with each side making a handful of mistakes defensively, four Barr errors and three PBA errors. Chenoweth was given the loss after entering the game in a tough situation late. Offensively, Lantigua had two hits on the night while Faranda,  Roper, Williams recorded the remaining hits and PBA drew four walks in the game.Â
The Sailfish will look to bounce back when they return to SSC play this weekend at Eckerd. The two sides will play a three-game series, one game Friday at 6 pm and a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon.
