WEST PALM BEACH, Fla- The Palm Beach Atlantic men's lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the season to the Rollins Tars 15-7. The Sailfish fall to 1-1 on the season.
PBA struggled to gain possession early in the first quarter as the Tars opened the game up on a 4-0 run. PBA defender
Gunner Gebelein ended the scoring drought with 8:07 left in the first quarter. Gebelein cleared the ball and cranked a bounce shot for his first goal of the year. Gebelein finished the game with one goal, three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
PBA cut the deficit to 4-2 when
Joshua Turner scored his first goal of the year with 3:08 left in the first quarter. Rollins closed out the quarter on a 2-0 run for a 6-2 lead. PBA freshman attack
Caleb Southard buried his third goal of the year with 6:26 left in the first half. Southard dodged from the back of the net and ran goal line extended. At halftime the Tars lead 9-3.
Hunter Hopman notched his third assist of the season when he connected with
Dylan Insolia. Insolia ripped a shot to cut the deficit to 9-4 with 9:07 left in the third quarter. Hopman leads the 'Fish in assists with three this season. The score was 10-4 Tars after the third quarter.
The Sailfish went on a 2-0 run of their own to start the fourth quarter. Southard found
Henry Sloyan for a goal to cut the deficit to 10-5. Sloyan is tied with Southard for the team lead in goals with three. 27 seconds later
Ben Justice ripped a lazer to bring the Sailfish within four. Rollins responded with a goal to make the score 11-6. With 9:40 left in the fourth quarter
Zach Layne assisted Turner for his second goal of the game.
With 7:13 left in the game and the score at 11-7 a two minute unnecessary roughness penalty hindered the Sailfish comeback. The penalty was unreleasable as the Tars pumped in two goals during the man up period and closed the game out on a 4-0 run.
Ben Lightsey started in net for PBA and recorded 13 saves for the second consecutive game.
PBA (1-1) travels to Alabama for a tilt against Montevallo on Feb. 26.
