WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball team returned home to host Rollins in Rubin Arena on Friday night.
The Sailfish looked to complete the season sweep over the Tars. PBA (11-10, 5-6 SSC) took the opening set but fell behind a frisky Rollins (7-16, 2-10 SSC) team, 2-1. With their backs against the wall, the Sailfish came back to win in five sets. The win preserved PBA's nine-year winning streak over Rollins.
Kayla Matthews led PBA with 19 kills, hitting .283 with 12 digs, three aces, and two blocks.
Mary Morgan Formby and
Kaileigh Ammons totaled 11 kills each. Formby hit .370 with five blocks while Ammons hit .348 with five blocks and an ace.
Jayden Otto recorded 48 assists, 15 digs, and six kills. Otto led the team in assists and digs.
Lauren Cummings finished with 11 digs while
Jayna Bredenberg reached 10 digs.
The Sailfish duo of Formby and Matthews led PBA's attack, and the combo of
Anna Gregerson and Ammons in the middle helped lead to five blocks in the set. PBA led Rollins for most of the set, taking it 25-18.
The second set was neck and neck until it hit the midway point. Back-to-back kills from Matthews made it 16-15. The Tars answered with a 6-0 run, including four attack errors by the 'Fish, which gave RC a 21-16 lead in the set. The visitors held on to win, 25-19.
PBA erupted to an 8-3 run to start the third set, but the Tars battled back to take a 13-12 lead after three blocks from the RC defense. Rollins pulled away to a four-point lead, but the 'Fish fought back to tie the set at 21. Several unforced errors by PBA proved costly, and Rollins took the set, 25-23.
The Sailfish dominated midway into the fourth set. A 6-1 run with kills from Gregerson and Zylstra with an ace from Ammons made it 21-14 PBA. Rollins battled all the way back to tie the set at 22; however, the 'Fish ended the fourth with three consecutive points, including a kill by Gregerson and a pair of errors from the Tars. PBA stayed alive by winning the set, 25-22.
PBA kept its momentum rolling in the final set. Matthews and Gregerson teamed up to give the 'Fish an early 7-3 lead. A 5-0 run later in the set, with kills from Formby and Zylstra put PBA ahead, 12-4. The Sailfish held on to win, 15-7 after a block from Otto and Ammons.
PBA outhit the Tars, .210 - .139. The Sailfish attack came alive later in the match. The 'Fish hit .364 as a team in the fourth set, followed by a .350 hitting percentage in the fifth set.
The Sailfish play again on Saturday against Embry-Riddle. The match at Rubin Arena takes place at 4 p.m.
