Men's Basketball Nearly Upsets No. 25 Barry

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic men's basketball played its first home game of 2022 against No. 25-ranked Barry on Wednesday.

The last two Sailfish contests against Barry (12-3, 7-3 SSC) have gone to overtime, and tonight's matchup was just as closely contested. PBA (5-11, 5-5 SSC) held a double-digit lead at halftime, but the Bucs came back after getting hot from downtown. The 'Fish held the lead with less than five minutes to go, but some tough shot-making by the Bucs down the stretch allowed Barry to avoid the upset and win, 90-85.

Jules Jasmin led the 'Fish with 20 points, nine rebounds, and five steals. Will Lee was right behind him with 17 points and a team-high seven assists. Jakob Hester scored 16 points, going a perfect 6-for-6 from the field with five assists, three blocks, and a steal. Nate Ward finished with 11 points and five rebounds. Jalen Cooper had six points, four rebounds, and two steals.

Barry forced the Sailfish into playing a fast pace from the opening tip, but PBA started the game on a 16-6 run. The Sailfish held a lead for the majority of the first half. A dunk from Jasmin gave PBA a lead with just under 16 minutes to go and the 'Fish led for the rest of the period. PBA earned all the momentum heading into halftime, ending the final five minutes of the half on a 12-3 run. PBA lead 42-29 at the break. The Sailfish defense forced Barry to shoot just 31 percent with 12 turnovers in the period.

The Bucs found their stroke from 3-point range early in the second half. The visitors quickly cut PBA's lead to one point just three and a half minutes into the second period after four 3-pointers. The Sailfish withstood the initial run with a triple from Marcus Montalvo restoring the PBA lead to nine points with 10 minutes left to go.

An old-fashioned 3-point play and two more 3-pointers from the Bucs cut the Sailfish lead back down to two. The Bucs took their first lead since early in the first half with four and a half minutes left to play. The Sailfish cut the lead down to one-point two times down the stretch, but they failed to get the one last stop they needed. Barry held on to win 90-85.

Barry shot 9-for-13 from beyond the arc in the second half. The visitors converted on nine of their last 11 field-goal attempts. PBA outshot the Bucs for the game, 52-to-47 percent. Although PBA had fewer turnovers than the Bucs, Barry scored 21 points off turnovers compared to 17 for the Sailfish. The difference in the game can also be found in second-chance points. The Bucs got 16 second-chance points off 16 offensive rebounds. Overall, Barry won the rebounding battle, 41-34.

The Sailfish hit the road this weekend for a game at Rollins. The game in Winter Park, Fla. starts at 4 p.m.
