WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball team hosted the 2019 SSC Champions, Lynn in its first home conference game of 2021.
Coming off a tough, five-set defeat against Nova Southeastern less than 24 hours ago, the Sailfish had a quick turnaround against a Fighting Knights team that had not played since Tuesday. The rest turned out to be an advantage for Lynn (4-5, 1-1) who won the match at Rubin Arena, 3-0.
Jazz Schmidt led PBA (4-6, 0-2 SSC) with nine kills along with a team-high 18 assists and a pair of digs.
Amber Rowoldt was right behind her with eight kills of her own with six digs.
Mary Morgan Formby totaled seven kills with two block assists.
Ally Smith totaled 14 digs while
Alyssa Avitia finished with 13 assists and eight digs.
Anna Gregerson put up a team-high four block assists and a solo block.
The Sailfish started a little slow out of the gate in the first set. The Fighting Knights pulled away in the middle of the set with a 4-1 run and never looked back.
Maddy Hooper attempted to keep the 'Fish within striking distance with a kill to make it 19-13, but Lynn ended the set on a 6-1 run to take the first set, 6-1.
The intensity of the match increased in the second set as PBA started to find its rhythm. The Sailfish held the lead for the majority of the set until a 4-0 run from Lynn gave the Fighting Knights a 21-20 advantage. PBA battled back and had a pair of chances to close out the set. Unfortunately for the 'Fish, they lacked the last kill they needed as Lynn closed the set with a 3-0 run, taking the set 28-26.
The 'Fish tried to muster a comeback in the third set, but several unforced attacking errors allowed Lynn to pull away to an 18-11 advantage. PBA showed some fight with a pair of aces by Schmidt, but the comeback did not happen quick enough as Lynn took the final set 25-19 to close the match.
Lynn posted a 65 percent side-out percentage while outhitting the Sailfish .282-.132. PBA did finish with more blocks than the Fighting Knights, totaling seven team blocks.
PBA's next match is on the road at Rollins on Sept. 24. The match in Winter Park, Fla. starts at 7 p.m.
