Sailfish Open Road Trip With Sweep at Rollins

WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball team started its weekend by traveling to face Rollins on Friday night.

The Sailfish returned to the win column by sweeping the Tars (3-8, 0-3 SSC) in three close sets. The young PBA (5-6, 1-2 SSC) squad showed poise and composure throughout the match while coming from behind to win every set. The win snaps a four-match skid for the 'Fish.

Amber Rowoldt led the Sailfish attack with 13 kills while hitting .281 and adding four digs. Mary Morgan Formby also tallied 10 kills of her own with a pair of block assists. Jazz Schmidt recorded another double-double with 27 assists and 12 digs. Anna Gregerson led the PBA front-line with two solo blocks and three block assists. Ally Smith led PBA with a team-high 14 digs.

The Tars took an early lead in the first set. A 4-0 run from the hosts put RC ahead 11-7. PBA regrouped and tied the set with a 5-1 run of its own with a pair of kills and a block by Gregerson. A kill from Formby gave PBA its first lead of the set, 16-15. Rollins refused to go away as both teams traded points. Gregerson came through again with a solo block to give PBA a 21-20 lead. She did it again to make it 24-21 which allowed an ace from Alyse Cundiff to seal the set, 25-21. The 'Fish hit a match-high .206 in the set.

Facing an 11-4 deficit early in the second set, the Sailfish battled all the way back, chipping away at the Tars lead. PBA took advantage of a pair of attack errors and service errors from the Tars to fuel a 7-2 run to make it 15-14 RC. The Sailfish had to grind out the majority of the set, gaining their first lead after another RC attack error later in the set made it 24-23. Rollins tied the set at 24 but kills from Cundiff and Schmidt closed out the 26-24 set win for the 'Fish.

PBA continued the theme of comebacks in the third set. RC was determined to stay alive, taking a 10-6 lead thanks to a few unforced errors from the 'Fish. PBA recomposed and went on a 9-2 run made up of kills from Schmidt, Formby, and Rowoldt, giving the 'Fish a 15-12 lead. The Tars came back to re-take a 20-18 lead, but PBA was dead set on ending the match, ending the set on a 7-1 run with kills from Gregerson, Formby, and Cundiff. Fittingly, Gregerson and Formby sealed the 25-21 set win with a block.

The Sailfish attacked the Tars with an aggressive serving strategy, totaling eight service aces to RC's one. PBA also had success receiving serves, holding the hosts to one ace. PBA finished the match with a 64 percent side-out percentage.

PBA concludes its road trip tomorrow with an away match at Embry-Riddle. The match in Daytona Beach, Fla. starts at 4 p.m.
