LAKELAND, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic men's lacrosse team headed to Florida Southern to face the Mocs for the second time this season. Coming off their best performance of the season in a win over Saint Leo, the Sailfish couldn't carry that momentum over to tonight's game as PBA fell 27-15.
The Sailfish got off to a solid start as they led after the first quarter 4-3.
Zack Figura found
Logan Robbins for PBA's first goal just 1:37 into the game to tie the score at 1-1. Four minutes later,
Hunter Hopman assisted
Austin Evans as he continued his hot goal-scoring form.
Christopher Tucker found the back of the net twice in the final four minutes of the first quarter to give the Sailfish the 4-3 lead. The Sailfish outshot the Mocs 11-9 in the opening quarter and won the battle in the faceoff circle, taking five of the first eight chances.
The Mocs made a run at the beginning of the second quarter as they scored four of the first five goals.
Henry Sloyan was able to find the back of the FSC net for the Sailfish to prevent a bigger Moccasins run. Tucker got his hat-trick in the second quarter and
Tanner Pohl added a goal, but the Sailfish were outscored 8-3 in the quarter. PBA goalie
Gerrit Kurtycz was coming off the SSC Defensive Player of the Week award for his performances against Saint Leo, but he was unable to make the same sort of impact today as he made four saves while allowing ten goals. The Sailfish went into the halftime break trailing 11-7 after the high-scoring Mocs quarter.
Unfortunately for the Sailfish, the Moccasins offensive onslaught continued into the second half. The Sailfish defense had three straight solid performances in their previous games but the Mocs offense was too much tonight as they scored 16 goals in the second half. The Sailfish were outscored 9-3 in the third quarter and 7-5 in the fourth quarter. The Sailfish managed to outshoot the Mocs 51-47 but were not able to be as effective in those chances. Evans and Tucker each scored three goals for the 'Fish as
Ben Justice and Sloyan each added two.
The Sailfish have one more opportunity to get back in the winner's circle before their season ends. PBA is slated to play at Rollins on May 1. The Tars came out on top in the team's previous meeting 10-5.
