FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic baseball team headed south this afternoon to take on the Nova Southeastern Sharks for a single midweek game. The Sailfish bats came to life late in the game as the Sailfish move to 2-0 against the Sharks on the year.
Christian Horner got the start for the Sailfish and the Sharks put up a run in the first inning off the junior pitcher. A leadoff walk and a steal scored on a two-out single as PBA's starters have struggled in first inning of games this year. He got help from his offense in the top of the second inning when
Sebastian Salado hit a solo home run out to right field to tie the game. Horner settled in after his opening inning, but gave up two hard-luck runs in the third as a routine fly to right field that would have been the third out of the inning was lost in the sun and allowed two Shark runs to score. He finished with a pitching line of 3.2 innings, surrendering the three runs while striking out three but walking four.
The Sailfish got one run back in the fourth to cut the deficit to 3-2 when
Jake Roper singled through the left side of the infield and
Brandon Seltzer who led the innings off with a walk scored. The next three Sailfish relievers of
Jake Sciarrotta,
Jamil Vanheyningen, and
Joey Hennessey got the Sailfish through the sixth inning allowing just one hit. However, the three each walked two batters during their combined three innings out of the bullpen.
In the sixth, the 'Fish tied the game as
Landen Morrison tripled to plate
Carlos Lara who led off the frame with a single. After two walks to load the bases, the Sharks escaped further damage as
Robert Fabelo was forced into a double play. However, the Sailfish weren't done creating scoring opportunities as they scored three in the seventh.
Dylan Tosto and Salado scored on a Morrison double and Lara later scored on a
Ramon Machado sacrifice fly as PBA took a 6-3 lead.
The best and final chance for the Sharks came in the bottom of the inning when they loaded the bases off Hennessey with two outs. Freshman
Ryan Webster came in and got out of the jam as he punched out the first batter he faced to leave the bases loaded. The Sailfish added one insurance run in the ninth as Lara scored on a Roper fielder's choice.
Andrew Sieczkowski came in and closed out the final inning as the Sailfish prevailed 7-3.
The Sailfish outhit the Sharks ten to four for the game, led by
Landen Morrison who went 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI's. Salado finished 2-for-5 with two runs and nine-hole hitter
Carlos Lara stayed hot as he reached base and scored three times.
Joey Hennessey earned the win out of the bullpen for the Sailfish as he went 1.1 innings and the Sailfish took the lead as he held the Sharks scoreless in the sixth and seventh. Base runners were plentiful for both sides as each pitching staff walked eleven batters, but the Sailfish took advantage of their opportunities and held on for the win.
The Sailfish are off for the remainder of the week and are scheduled to return to action on April 30 against Florida Tech. The Sailfish are 9-12 on the year and have five scheduled games against the Panthers remaining.
