Sailfish Pitching Downs the Tars

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic baseball team faced off with the Rollins Tars for a single midweek game today at the Rinker Athletic Campus. After splitting two games in Winter Park earlier this month, the Sailfish claimed the season series as they defeated the Tars 4-3.

The Sailfish handed the ball to their ace Christian Denton as he made his seventh start of the year. The Sailfish bats struck first in support of their senior left-handed hurler as they scored one run in the bottom of the first innings. Leadoff man Landen Morrison drew an opening walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch before Ramon Machado doubled to left field to bring him home. Denton looked in control as he retired the side in order in two of his first three innings of work. In the fourth, a combination of Rollins small ball and spotty Sailfish defense led to two Tars runs. A leadoff single and a sacrifice bunt was scored later in the inning on a two-out Cameron Meehan single. He would later score on a ground ball that got through Sailfish shortstop Sean Houck which allowed him to advance home and give the Tars the 2-1 lead.

The Sailfish equalized in the home half of the fifth when Seltzer singled to center to score Morrison who led off the inning with a single of his own. The Tars threatened in the sixth but left fielder Jake Roper shot down a runner at the plate for the third out of the inning. The Sailfish retook the lead in the bottom half of the inning when Robert Fabelo singled to leadoff and was brought home by Sebastian Salado.

Denton continued into the seventh inning holding the Rollins bats at bay, but he damaged himself as a pickoff attempt was thrown into center field and a throw from center fielder Brandon Seltzer hit the runner at third which allowed him to scamper home and tie the game 3-3. The Sailfish had an answer yet again as they scored for the third straight innings when Robert Fabelo doubled with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Two consecutive wild pitches allowed the Sailfish catcher to advance to third and then score the game-winning run.

Denton retired the first batter in the eighth before his day was ended as he eclipsed the 100 pitch mark. He finished with a line of 7.1 innings, scattering six hits, allowing three runs, just one earned, and earning the win to take his record to 3-3 on the season. Justin Lovell was the first man out of the bullpen and got the final two outs of the eighth. The Sailfish then turned the ball over to Ruiari Murphy who has developed into the PBA closer throughout the year. After retiring the first two batters he faced in the ninth, Murphy stranded a man on second as the final batter grounded it back to the PBA pitcher and Murphy recorded his fourth save.

Morrison and Fabelo combined to score all four of the Sailfish runs and reach base five times. Seltzer went 2-for-4 at the plate with a triple and an RBI as the Sailfish outhit the Tars 8-7 for the game.

The 'Fish are playing their best baseball of the season as they have won seven of their last ten games to take their record to 10-12 on the year. The Sailfish will look to continue that good run of form as they have five games remaining, all against the Florida Tech Panthers. PBA will head to Melbourne on Friday for the single game before hosting the Panthers for two games on Sunday.
