WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic men's tennis team faced a tough test in its home opener in the form of No. 2-ranked Barry. The shorthanded Sailfish competed well with the Bucs, but fell short 5-2.
Barry (2-0, 2-0 SSC) got off to a hot start in doubles play. PBA's (1-4, 1-3 SSC)
Erik Carlsten and
Rodolfo Hasegawa fell short at No. 1 doubles to Tim Buttner and Ignasi Forcano, 6-2. The Bucs clinched the doubles point after Arnau Rodriguez and Alejandro Palacios best PBA's
Jorge Santamaria and
Luis Eduardo Platas, 6-3. The Bucs swept double play after besting PBA's
Philipp Hoffmann and
Blake Williams at the No. 2 position, 7-5.
Forcano made it 2-0 Barry after a 6-1, 6-2 win over Platas at No. 5 singles. The Sailfish fell behind 3-0 after Carlsten dropped his match at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-1. The visitors clinched the match after defeating
Miguel Paz at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 6-2. Hasegawa played a tough match against Hugo Cazaban, but fell short, 7-6 (7), 6-3. PBA avoided the sweep after Hoffmann earned a win at over No. 42-ranked Palacios at No. 2 singles, 6-7, 4-6. The Sailfish ended the match on another high note when Santamaria picked up the 6-7 (1), 2-6 win at No. 3 singles.
PBA is scheduled to compete against another ranked opponent on Thursday against No. 10 Lynn. The match at the Mitch Gornto Tennis Center is scheduled for 2 p.m.
