Volleyball Sweeps Barry on the Road

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball team concluded its string of road matches on Saturday against Barry.

The Sailfish were coming off a dramatic five-set win against Florida Tech on Friday night. PBA (16-13, 9-9 SSC) kept its momentum going against Barry (13-13, 6-13 SSC), sweeping the Bucs 3-0. The Sailfish have now won five of their last six matches. Tonight's win completed the season sweep of the Bucs. The Sailfish lead the DII-era record against the Bucs, 19-7, including winning in 18 of their last 19 meetings.

Amber Rowoldt was right behind with nine kills and six digs of her own. Alyse Cundiff hit a team-best .462 with eight kills, five digs, and three blocks. Alyssa Avitia led PBA with 16 assists and six digs. Ally Smith dug up 14 balls as libero. Maddy Hooper rejected a team-best seven attacks with two kills.

The Sailfish got out to a commanding 17-11 lead in the first set after three straight kills from Cundiff and a set error by the Bucs. A 5-2 run helped Barry cut into the Sailfish deficit and make it 20-18 PBA. The Sailfish closed out the set in dominating fashion, ending on a 5-1 run. A kill from Rowoldt put the exclamation point on a 25-19 set win. PBA hit a match-best .424 in the set.

PBA played from behind early in the second set after Barry took a 9-7 lead. The Sailfish roared back with a 7-2 run with kills by Schmidt and Anna Gregerson along with several errors by the Bucs to take a 14-11 lead. A 5-0 run later in the set with a kill from Gregerson, blocks from Hooper, Mary Morgan Formby, and Rowoldt along with an ace by Smith made it 22-15. The Bucs fought back, but another block by Hooper and Cundiff sealed the 25-20 set win for PBA.

The Sailfish led for almost the entire third set, beginning with a quick 12-6 lead after an ace from Avitia. Barry slowly chipped away at the lead, eventually cutting the deficit to two with PBA leading 15-13. A ball-handling error by the hosts later in the set kickstarted a 6-1 run, including two blocks that gave the 'Fish some breathing room. An error by the Bucs clinched the 25-18 set win for PBA and completed the sweep. The 'Fish defense held the Bucs to a match-worst .074 hitting percentage in the set.
