Sailfish Sweep Tritons on Senior Night

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball team hosted Eckerd for PBA's senior night on Friday night.

The Sailfish picked up a crucial win against the Tritons in front of a packed Rubin Arena crowd. PBA (17-13, 10-9 SSC) entered the match at No. 7 in the South Region rankings while Eckerd (17-13, 8-11 SSC) was No. 9 in the rankings. PBA swept the Tritons, avenging its five-set loss against EC earlier this season. The 'Fish completed the sweep thanks to a thrilling come-from-behind win in the third set, coming back from a 23-18 lead to win 26-24.

Alyse Cundiff led the PBA attack with 12 kills, hitting .296 with four digs and four blocks. Jazz Schmidt finished one kill shy of a triple-double, totaling a team-high 18 assists and team-high 12 digs with nine kills. Amber Rowoldt totaled eight kills to reach exactly 1,000 in her career, becoming the fifth player in PBA's DII-era to reach that milestone. She hit .316 in the match with five digs. Maddy Hooper added seven kills and three blocks while hitting a team-best .500. Senior libero Ally Smith had four digs with seven assists, two aces, and a kill. Alyssa Avitia tallied 15 assists with six digs.

The Sailfish got off to a hot start to the match with an 11-3 run with kills from Cundiff, Anna Gregerson, Mary Morgan Formby, Hooper, and Rowoldt making it 15-8. A 6-1 run later in the set kept the momentum on PBA's side and gave the 'Fish a 22-13 lead. The Tritons did not go down without a fight. With PBA leading 24-15, the visitors went on a 7-0 run to make it 24-22 PBA. A ball-handling error from the Tritons stopped the run and sealed the 25-22 set win for PBA.

After Eckerd took a 10-7 lead to start the set, the 'Fish battled back with a 7-0 run with kills from Gregerson and Hooper along with two attack errors from EC and a pair of aces from Smith. The run gave the 'Fish a lead that they held for the rest of the set. Seniors Avitia, Schmidt, and Marlena Kincaid picked up kills down the stretch as PBA cruised to a 25-15 set win to take a 2-0 lead. PBA hit a match-best, .500 in the set.

Eckerd was determined to stay alive in the third set. With PBA leading by a point, the Tritons recorded a 9-1 run to take a 20-13 lead. The match intensity increased as the match seemed destined for a fourth set, but PBA slowly chipped away at the lead. With EC holding a 23-17 lead, an attack error by the Tritons kickstarted a 7-0 run which gave PBA a 24-23 lead. A bad set by the 'Fish allowed Eckerd to tie the set at 24, but a kill by Cundiff and an attack error by the Tritons closed out the come-from-behind, 26-24 set win and completed the sweep.

The 'Fish outhit the Tritons, .333 - .214 in the match. PBA recorded a 60 percent side-out percentage compared to just 48 percent for Eckerd. The Sailfish attack committed just nine errors in the match.

PBA honored seniors, Rowoldt, Schmidt, Avitia, Smith, Kincaid, Caroline Henderson, and Sophia Rasmussen before tonight's match.

The Sailfish wrap up their regular season tomorrow against Saint Leo. The match at Rubin Arena starts at 1 p.m.
