WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball team restarted its SSC slate on Friday night against Embry-Riddle at Rubin Arena.
After falling in five sets to the Eagles in their first matchup earlier this season, the Sailfish looked to get revenge against ERAU (18-4, 9-3 SSC). PBA (11-12, 4-8 SSC) pushed the Eagles to their limit again, but the 'Fish failed to close out the match, falling in five sets again, 3-2. PBA has played six five-set matches this season and has fallen short in all six, making up half of its total losses.
Jazz Schmidt led PBA in both kills (20) and assists (22) while hitting .340. Schmidt's 20 kills set a new career-high for the senior.
Amber Rowoldt followed with a double-double of 12 kills and 14 digs.
Ally Smith led the 'Fish with 21 digs and two service aces.
Alyssa Avitia tallied a double-double of her own with 21 assists with 11 digs.
Mary Morgan Formby totaled eight kills while
Caroline Henderson tallied a season-best seven kills.
Anna Gregerson led PBA with six block assists. Schmidt, Formby, and
Maddy Hooper tied with three blocks each.
After dropping the first set to the Eagles 25-18, the Sailfish looked to even the score in the second set. A 5-1 run with kills from Rowoldt and Formby followed by a Sailfish block gave the 'Fish a 13-10 lead. PBA extended its lead later in the set with an 11-2 run with three kills from Schmidt, two kills from
Alyse Cundiff, and a kill from Gregerson made it 24-15. The Eagles didn't go away quietly, battling all the way back to tie the set at 24. PBA held on to win the set, 26-24, after a kill from Rowoldt and an error from ERAU. The 'Fish hit a match-best, .275 in the set.
The Sailfish had an opportunity to seize a crucial lead in the match during the third set. A 5-2 run with kills from Henderson, Rowoldt, an ace from Schmidt, and a PBA block gave the 'Fish a 24-23 lead. The Eagles regrouped coming out of a timeout, ending the set on a 3-0 run to win 26-24. The set consisted of four lead changes and six ties.
PBA played from behind in the fourth set. Things looked grim midway through the set as the Eagles led, 19-13. PBA slowly chipped away at the lead before ending the set on an 8-1 run with three kills from Schmidt, two kills from Henderson, a kill from Rowoldt, and a pair of Sailfish blocks. PBA stayed alive by taking the fourth set, 25-23.
The Sailfish hung around in the final set as each team traded points. A kill from Rowoldt cut the ERAU lead to 8-7, but the Eagles pulled away with a 6-0 run to take a 14-7 lead. PBA attempted to fight back with three straight points, but ERAU held on to win the final set, 15-10.
ERAU outhit the 'Fish .273-.189 in the match. The Eagles totaled 15 blocks against the 'Fish who totaled 26 attacking errors.
The Sailfish look to bounce back tomorrow against Rollins. The match at Rubin Arena starts at 4 p.m.
