Volleyball Takes Down Tars at Home

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball team returned to the win column Saturday afternoon with an impressive showing against Rollins at Rubin Arena.

Coming off a heartbreaking, five-set loss against Embry-Riddle on Friday night, the 'Fish looked to bounce back against a Rollins (5-18, 1-12 SSC) team that won its last three matches. The 'Fish dropped the first set but bounced back to take three consecutive sets against the Tars, winning the contest 3-1. Today's win clinched the season sweep of the Tars. PBA (12-12, 5-8 SSC) has been victorious in 14 straight matches against the Tars.

Jazz Schmidt and Amber Rowoldt tied with 11 kills each to lead the Sailfish attack. Schmidt hit .391 and added a team-high 22 assists and nine digs to her stat line. Rowoldt hit .219 from the outside with four blocks, three digs, and three aces. Maddy Hooper led the 'Fish in points, totaling 10 kills, five aces, and five blocks while hitting a sizzling .909. Her 10 kills marked a season-best for the freshman. Alyssa Avitia added 19 assists and seven digs while Ally Smith put up a team-best 10 digs and two aces. Mary Morgan Formby finished with nine kills and three blocks.

A 7-0 run by the Tars in the opening set gave the visitors a 17-13 lead at the midway point of the first. PBA tried to mount a comeback, subbing in Caroline Henderson at the tail end of the set, but Rollins held on for a 25-21 win.

Rollins tried to keep its momentum in the second set, jumping out to a 9-6 lead. The Sailfish took advantage of five Rollins attacking errors and an ace by Avitia to retake the lead, 12-9. With the Tars leading 13-12, PBA went on another 6-0 run with four aces from Hooper along with a kill from Cundiff and a 'Fish block from Hooper and Cundiff to take a 19-14 lead. Hooper had not recorded an ace all season before today. A block from Hooper and Formby put the exclamation point on a 25-22 set win for the 'Fish.

PBA got off to a quick start in the crucial third set. The Sailfish started the third with a 14-4 run with kills from Rowoldt, Schmidt, Cundiff, and Hooper to set the tone against the Tars. The 'Fish kept it rolling later in the set with a 5-0 run, taking a 19-7 lead thanks to a pair of kills by Hooper, a block from Rowoldt and Hooper, another ace from Avitia, and a kill by Schmidt. PBA never looked back as a kill from Formby sealed a 25-16 win.

The fourth set mirrored the fourth set as PBA jumped out to a 10-4 lead. The Sailfish ended strong, ripping off a 7-1 run with kills from Ryleigh Blough, Rowoldt, and Formby in addition to an ace from Smith to take a 24-12 lead. Fittingly, a kill from Hooper clinched the 25-13 win in the set and the 3-1 win in the match.

The Sailfish outmuscled the Tars on offense, .325-.197. The PBA offense was specifically efficient in the ladder part of the match, hitting .591 in the third set and .560 in the fourth set. The 'Fish ended the match with 11 total blocks and 10 service aces. The Sailfish posted a 58 percent side-out percentage compared to 46 percent for the Tars.

The Sailfish compete at home again on Tuesday against Nova Southeastern. The match at Rubin Arena starts at 7 p.m.
