WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball team took a hiatus from its conference schedule to compete in the South Region Crossover against schools from the Gulf South Conference.
The Sailfish played in two matches on Friday, facing off against Mississippi College and the University of West Georgia. PBA started the day with a win against the Choctaws, sweeping MC, 3-0. PBA senior
Ally Smith tallied her 100th career ace in the match. She finished the day with four total aces, totaling 102 for her career, tying for 10th in PBA's DII-era. The Sailfish ended the day with a 3-1 win against West Georgia, ending with a dominant 25-9 win in the final set.
PBA concludes play at the South Region Crossover on Saturday with a matchup against Shorter. The match is scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m.
Palm Beach Atlantic - 3, Mississippi College – 0
The Sailfish got off to a strong start against MC. A kill from
Alyse Cundiff made it 17-10 Sailfish in the first set. The Choctaws countered with a pair of points, but the 'Fish closed the set on an 8-1 run with kills from
Mary Morgan Formby,
Amber Rowoldt, and
Jazz Schmidt along with an ace from
Alyssa Avitia to win the set, 25-13. PBA hit a scorching .565 in the first set.
The Choctaws regrouped and developed a 10-8 lead of its own in the second set. The Sailfish battled back with Smith's 100 career ace tying the set at 11. PBA continued its run with a block from Schmidt and Hooper along with kills from Schmidt and Cundiff giving the 'Fish a 20-13 lead. A few unforced errors by the Sailfish allowed MC to work its way back into the set, cutting the Sailfish lead to 22-21. It was too little too late for the Choctaws as PBA held its lead with a kill by Rowoldt sealing the 25-23 set win.
PBA returned to its form from the first set in the third. An early run with kills by
Anna Gregerson, Cundiff, Formby, and Rowoldt along with a block from Cundiff and Gregerson gave the 'Fish an 11-4 lead. Later in the set, PBA ended the set on another 8-1 run with kills from
Payton Jonason and
Marlena Kincaid clinching the 25-13 set win and 3-0 match win.
Cundiff and Schmidt tied for a team-high 11 kills. Schmidt hit an efficient .611 with 17 assists, five digs, and two blocks. Rowoldt was right behind with nine kills, hitting .562 with eight digs. Avitia tied Schmidt with 17 assists of her own with seven digs and two aces.
The Sailfish outhit the Choctaws .389-.146 in the match. PBA posted a 65 percent side-out percentage. The 'Fish totaled seven aces in the match compared to just two for Mississippi College.
Palm Beach Atlantic - 3, West Georgia – 1
The Wolves from West Georgia shocked the Sailfish by taking the first set 25-23, despite PBA outhitting UWG .375-.353 in the set. The Sailfish pulled away at the end of a close second set, ending the second on a 4-1 run consisting of two kills from Cundiff and a kill and an ace from Schmidt to win 25-19.
The Sailfish came through in the clutch in the third set. A 3-0 run by the Wolves gave UWG a 20-18 lead. Kills from Formby and Schmidt coming out of a PBA timeout tied the set at 20. A kill from Rowoldt and an ace my Smith resulted in a 22-21 lead for the 'Fish. The set was tied at 22 and again at 23, but it was PBA who came out on top 25-23 after a UWG attacking error followed by a block from
Maddy Hooper and Schmidt.
PBA completed its comeback in dominating fashion in the fourth set. The Sailfish posted a 90 percent side-out percentage in the fourth while hitting .481 on their way to a 25-9 set win.
Schmidt turned in an excellent performance leading PBA in both kills (18) and assists (23) while hitting .444. Cundiff finished with 14 kills while hitting .323 with five digs. Formby totaled 11 kills on a .667 hitting percentage. Rowoldt reached 10 kills with 11 digs and two aces. Avitia totaled 22 assists with three digs and an ace. Smith recorded a team-high 20 digs in the contest.
