WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic men's tennis team hosted UNC-Asheville at the Mitch Gornto Tennis Center on Monday evening.
After delaying the match for an hour due to wind, the contest began at 5 p.m. After jumping out to an early 3-0 lead in the match, PBA (5-4) withstood a UNCA (7-6) comeback to win the match 4-2. The Sailfish risked surrendering the doubles point after dropping the match at No. 3 doubles, 6-1. Fortunately for the 'Fish,
Erik Carlsten and
Rodolfo Hasegawa earned a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles followed by a win at No. 1 doubles by
Philipp Hoffmann and
Roberto Binaghi to steal the doubles point.
Carlsten made it a 2-0 PBA lead by getting the 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles. Binaghi followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles to give the 'Fish a 3-0 lead. UNCA got on the board with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 win over
Umberto Rosi and No. 1 singles. Its comeback continued with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over
Miguel Paz at the No. 6 position made it 3-2. Hoffmann put an end to the comeback attempt by clinching the match with a 4-6, 6-0, 6-4, win at No. 2 singles.
This is the first win for the Sailfish against an NCAA DI opponent since last year against UCONN. PBA plays again on Wednesday against Daeman (N.Y). The match at the Mitch Gornto Tennis Center takes place at 4 p.m.
