PBA Guts out Overtime Win at Barry

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic men's basketball team traveled to face Barry in an important Sunshine State Conference matchup.

Entering the game, Barry held third place in the SSC standings, while the Sailfish sat a half-game behind in fourth place. PBA (17-6, 10-5 SSC) needed overtime, but the 'Fish downed the Bucs, 100-95, to earn their sixth win in a row and move ahead of Barry (16-7, 10-6) in the conference standings.

Malek Barber led the 'Fish with a double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds to go with six assists, three blocks and two steals. Jules Jasmin and Dan Largey contributed 19 points each. Darhius Nunn totaled 13 points, eight assists, six assists and three steals. De'Ondre Jackson and Justin Nichelson both finished in double digits. Jackson had 12 points while Nichelson had 10 points and six rebounds.

PBA wasted little time getting out to an early lead in the first half. Five minutes into the game, the Sailfish ripped off a 16-0 run thanks to the three-man tandem of Barber, Jasmin and Largey. The trio accounted for all of PBA's points during the run as the 'Fish took a 23-12 lead midway through the period,

Minutes later, the Sailfish continued to increase their lead. A 12-0 run from the 'Fish made it a 50-30 PBA lead. Barry responded with a pair of 3-pointers, but PBA went into the halftime break leading 50-38. The Sailfish dominated the battle of the boards in the first half. PBA held a 21-10 rebounding advantage in the period, nine of those coming at the offensive end which led to nine second-chance points for the 'Fish. The sides differed in how they got their points. PBA scored 32 points in the paint, while Barry stayed in the game by knocking down eight 3-pointers.

It didn't take long for Barry to cut into the Sailfish lead in the second half. The Bucs continued to let it fly from three which resulted in them taking a 61-60 lead with 13 minutes to go. The 'Fish responded with a 9-0 run to create some breathing room.

PBA led 79-68 with six minutes remaining, but failed to defend the barrage of threes coming from the hosts. A pair of triples and a layup made it a two-point game with four and a half minutes left. Both teams traded leads down the stretch, but Barry pulled away with a five-point lead with a minute left. Things looked bleak for PBA, but Largey converted a four-point play down the stretch to keep the 'Fish in the game. A Barry free throw made it a two-point game with 29 seconds left. Out of a timeout, the Nicholson converted a game-tying layup to send the game to overtime.

The 'Fish took a quick six-point lead at the start of overtime. The Bucs cut the game to two with 40 seconds left after two free throws and a layup; however, free throws from Largey and Aleksa Rakic iced the game to seal the 100-95 win for PBA.

The Sailfish finished the game with 48 points in the paint and a 40-31 rebounding advantage. PBA shot 52 percent from the field and went 30-34 from the charity stripe.
PBA's six-game winning streak is its longest streak in the Division II era. The Sailfish also notched their 17th win of the season which is also the most wins in a season in the Division II era. PBA also earned its 10th conference win which tied its total from the 2016-17 season which is the team's high since joining the SSC.

The 'Fish return home for a game against Saint Leo on Saturday. The game at Rubin Arena starts at 4 p.m.
