TAMPA, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic and Tampa split a pair of pitcher's duels on Thursday, as Abbey Busby and Makaleigh Dooley each threw a shutout and each went 1-1 on the day. Dooley and Busby have won seven of the 11 SSC Pitcher of the Week awards this season, and did not disappoint on the day as they allowed just three total runs between them.
Game 1: Tampa 2, PBA 0
The Spartans scored in the third inning of the series opener on Thursday, as two infield singles led to the Tampa run. The Sailfish were unable to get anything going at the plate, as the 'Fish picked up just three hits in the game, including a two-out triple from Magnolia West in the third inning. Liz Albertini and Maddie Bertisch picked up the other two PBA hits in the game.
Tampa outhit the Sailfish 9-3 in the game, and added a run in the sixth inning to win by the 2-0 final.
Game 2: PBA 2, Tampa 0
Busby and Dooley battled it out again in the second game of the day, as the game entered the sixth inning scoreless. West and Bertisch led off the sixth inning with infield singles, and Hayley Haas pinch-hit and laid down a bunt single to load the bases with nobody out. Maddie Biggs then picked up her first hit of the day, a two-RBI single down the third-base line to put the 'Fish up 2-0.
The two runs were all Busby needed, as she completed the shutout to improve to 22-11 on the season. The sophomore allowed four hits and struck out four in the victory. Dooley fell to 23-6 with the loss, which snapped a 19-game winning streak for the Spartans.
The Sailfish outhit Tampa 8-4 in the game, and improved to 27-20 on the season.
PBA and Tampa will close out their series at 10 a.m. tomorrow. The start time was moved up in order to attempt to beat inclement weather that is forecasted to move into the Tampa area Friday afternoon.
