Sailfish Complete Walk-Off Win Against Tars

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic softball defeated Rollins College in walk-off fashion on Friday night in the opening game of the weekend series. The Sailfish (13-13) scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to win the game against the Tars (16-3) who were up early. Katherine Budnovich knocked in the winning run on a single to shortstop cementing the 5-4 victory.

The Tars got on the board early scoring on a fielder's choice that the runner barely beat the tag at home. Rollins struck again in the top of the third when Lindsay Gehring hit a homerun over the left field wall.

The Sailfish got the run back in the bottom of the third when Janie McCloskey tripled deep to right center and then scored by beating a throw to home on an Alexis Guerra ground ball.

Rollins struck again in the top of the sixth and seventh. In the sixth the Tars manufactured one run on a double and then a single. In the seventh they were able to score due to some miscues on the Sailfish defense which put the score at 4-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Kaylee Winn and Maddie Biggs started the home half of the seventh inning with back-to-back singles before McCloskey took a pitch off the elbow to load the bases with one out. Guerra would follow that up with a hit by pitch herself which pushed Liz Albertini across the plate who pinch ran for Winn. Kaylee Hinds then drew a walk which sent home Hayley Haas who had pinch ran for Biggs to put the score at 4-3 in favor of the Tars. Maggie West then hit a ground ball that the third baseman was unable to handle which tied the game before Budnovich singled the other way deep in the hole allowing Hinds to score and won the game for the Sailfish 5-4.

The Sailfish had five hits by five different players with McCloskey's triple being the sole extra base hit. The 'Fish had three free bases which all came in the final inning on one walk and two HBP. Abbey Busby threw all seven innings giving up eight hits with two walks and three earned runs while striking out six.

The Sailfish return to action March 9 at Simpson Field as they invite the Tars back for a double header starting at 1 p.m.
