WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic baseball was firing on all cylinders Sunday afternoon, as they defeated No. 16 Nova Southeastern by a 14-1 score at J.M. "Jake" Rubin Park. PBA has now won their second consecutive Sunshine State Conference series and are now 5-7 in league play as NSU is now 9-6 in SSC play after dropping two out of three to PBA this weekend.
Lance Fry and Nik Sanders were both locked in early on Sunday, as neither team was able to score through the first four and a half innings. The Sailfish finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth inning, as Brandon Smith singled with two outs and Sean Houck and Marcos Perez walked to load the bases. Derek Schwimer then lined a three-run triple to left center to break open the scoring and came around to score himself on a wild pitch.
Fry worked out of a jam in the top of the sixth to keep the Sharks off the board, and the 'Fish scored two more in the bottom half as Danny Tufariello kept up his hot hitting with a two-run single up the middle.
The game remained 6-0 until the bottom of the eighth, where the Sailfish hitters piled it on the Sharks with eight runs on seven hits in the inning. Brandon Seltzer and Connor Rowland both had multiple RBI in the inning as the Sailfish put the game out of reach with the big inning.
Fry allowed just three hits in his six shutout innings of work Sunday, as he picks up the win to improve to 2-2 on the season. Kevin Nunez entered the game and escaped a jam to toss a scoreless inning while Orsen Josephina pitched a scoreless eighth and Smith pitched the ninth while allowing just one run.
Tufariello finished 3-for-5 with three RBI as he finishes the three-game series 8-for-12. Schwimer went 2-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored in the game while Smith finished 2-for-4 with a couple of runs scored as well.
PBA will return to action next weekend as they will head to St. Leo, Fla. for a three-game series against the Lions beginning Friday, March 29 at 6 p.m.
