WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic softball beat Lynn 6-0 in the opener on Saturday to secure the series win, and mounted a furious comeback attempt that fell just short in the finale as the 'Fish fell 9-8. PBA is now 21-15 on the season and 9-6 in Sunshine State Conference play.
Game 1: Palm Beach Atlantic 6, Lynn 0
Abbey Busby and Katherine Budnovich combined to shutout the Fighting Knights in the opening game of the day, as they allowed just two hits in total. Budnovich picked up the win in the game to improve to 5-5 on the season. The 'Fish got on the board in the second inning as Janie McCloskey was hit by pitch and advanced to third on a double by Maddie Biggs. After Kaylee Winn was also hit by pitch, Hannah Carlton walked to bring home a run and Kaley Hinds drove in another with a sac fly. The 'Fish scored two more runs in the frame as Magnolia West doubled down the right-field line.
PBA scored two more runs in the third inning as Katherine Budnovich led off with a triple and came home to score on a Biggs sac fly. McCloskey was hit by pitch once again and scored on a passed ball with two outs.
Neither team scored in the final four innings of the game as the Sailfish won by the 6-0 final.
West finished 2-for-3 with two RBI in the game as all four hits for the Sailfish were extra-base hits.
Game 2: Lynn 9, Palm Beach Atlantic 8
The Sailfish got off to a rough start in the series finale as Lynn scored five runs in the second inning to take a big lead. Maddie Biggs and Kaylee Winn hit back-to-back doubles in the third to get the 'Fish on the scoreboard, but Lynn added another run in the fourth to go up 7-2.
The Fighting Knights added two more runs to take a 9-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh, and that is where things got interesting.
Hayley Haas and Emma Gipson both reached base to begin the seventh, and two runs came around to score on a West triple to right-center. After a Maddie Bertisch RBI single and a Budnovich walk, McCloskey sent a three-run homer over the left-field fence to bring the 'Fish within one run. Winn doubled to reach base as the would-be tying run but the 'Fish could not get her home and Lynn held on to take the finale 9-8.
Four Sailfish picked up multiple hits in the game, as West, Bertisch, Biggs, and Winn all finished 2-for-4.
PBA will return to action next weekend, as they will take on nationally ranked Florida Tech in a three-game series in Melbourne, Fla.
