WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic baseball defeated Rollins College on Friday night in the opening game of the Sunshine State Conference weekend series against the Tars. The Sailfish (11-11) allowed only one hit while collecting eight to defeat the Tars (13-8) by a score of 4-2.
Mitchell Carroll picked up his third win pitching 5.2 innings while giving up only one hit and one earned run while striking out six. Carroll was perfect through his first four innings before giving up a walk in the top of the fifth that eventually lead to a run. After Carroll ran into trouble in the sixth head coach Kent Bottenfield turned to Orsen Josephina who got out of the inning with limited damage. Josephina pitched well as he went 3.1 innings giving up no hits and no runs while striking out four batters to pick up his second save of the year.
The Sailfish offense got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first when Brandon Seltzer roped a double over the shortstop's head allowing Derek Schwimer to score giving the Sailfish the 1-0 lead.
Ramon Machado, in his first game of the year, drove in two runs on a single past the pitcher up the middle in the bottom of the fifth to give PBA its second and third runs of the game.
The Sailfish added their fourth and final run in the bottom of the eighth on a Danny Tufariello sacrifice fly to right field that brought in Machado.
Seltzer led the Sailfish in hits with two and had an RBI. Connor Rowland had one hit in the game which was a double to deep right center.
The Sailfish and the Tars will finish up the series on Saturday, Mar. 16 with a doubleheader starting at noon.
