DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic baseball dropped a Sunshine State Conference game with Embry-Riddle on Friday night, as the 'Fish fell 7-1. The Sailfish fall to 6-9 on the season and 1-3 in SSC play while ERAU improves to 5-7 on the season and picks up their first conference win of the year.
The Sailfish loaded the bases in the top of the first with nobody out as Derek Schwimer and Sean Houck singled and Riley Herold walked to start the game. Unfortunately for the 'Fish they were not able to plate a run in the first. ERAU was able to capitalize on their baserunners in the bottom half of the inning as Zach Howard launched a two-out, two-strike homer to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead.
The 'Fish got a long ball of their own in the second as first baseman Brandon Smith hit his second homer of the season to left field to cut into the Eagle lead.
The 'Fish got multiple runners on base over and over again but couldn't come up with a big hit and trailed 3-1 into the late innings. Mitchell Carroll pitched into the sixth on the night, as the senior allowed just the three first-inning runs and struck out eight while allowing just three hits.
Heath Hawkins entered in the sixth for the 'Fish and worked out of a jam to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard and keep the Sailfish within striking distance at 3-1.
The Eagles added four runs in the seventh inning to take a big lead and put the game out of reach.
The 'Fish had 13 baserunners in the game but could only manage the one run on the Smith homer. Brandon Seltzer went 2-for-3 in the game for the 'Fish who picked up only five hits in total.
The Sailfish and Eagles will be back at it tomorrow as they will play a doubleheader at Sliwa Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
