CLEARWATER, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic softball split a pair of games at the NFCA Leadoff Classic on Saturday, as they defeated Wayne State 4-2 in the opener before falling to West Florida 11-5 in the night cap. The Sailfish sit 3-4 on the season after the split and will face off with West Georgia on Sunday morning at 11 a.m. to close out play in Clearwater.
Game 1: No. 18 Palm Beach Atlantic 4, Wayne State 2
Wayne State scored two runs off Sailfish starter Abbey Busby after a defensive miscue in the third inning to take an early lead. The 'Fish got one run back in the third inning as Magnolia West played Hayley Haas with a sacrifice fly.
Katherine Budnovich crushed a solo homer to lead off the fourth inning to tie the game at two, and the Sailfish took a lead in the fifth inning as West scored on a three-base error from Wayne State and Maddie Bertisch scored on a Budnovich sacrifice fly.
Busby took over the game from that point, as the sophomore allowed just five hits and one earned run in a complete-game victory.
PBA collected just three hits in the game but made them count as they only left five runners on base in the contest.
Game 2: West Florida 11, No. 18 Palm Beach Atlantic 5
PBA got off to a solid start against the Argos, as Bertisch doubled in a run in the first inning to give the 'Fish a lead. After the Argos scored two in the bottom of the first to take their own lead, the Sailfish offense exploded for four runs in the second inning.
Maddie Biggs, Hannah Carlton, and Kathryn Sutton all singled in the second inning, and West stepped up to the plate and crushed a triple to the right-field fence that cleared the bases. Alexis Guerra followed with an RBI groundout to give the 'Fish a 5-2 lead.
Unfortunately for the Sailfish that was all the offense could muster and the Argonauts scored nine unanswered runs to win the game 11-5.
West led the way offensively as she finished 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBI. Budnovich went 2-for-2 in the game while Carlton picked up two hits as well for the 'Fish, who tallied 10 hits in total.
