CLEARWATER, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic softball exploded for seven runs in the top of the fifth inning on Sunday as they defeated West Georgia 7-1. The Sailfish won three of their five games at the NFCA Leadoff Classic and now sit 4-4 on the season.
The Wolves pushed a run across in the first inning as a Sailfish error led to the unearned run. Sailfish starting pitcher Abbey Busby picked up a big strikeout with the bases loaded to end the UWG threat.
Magnolia West and Alexis Guerra had back-to-back singles in the third inning for the Sailfish but PBA could not come up with a two-out hit and were kept off the scoreboard.
West reached via walk in the fifth inning and stole second with one out. A UWG fielding error allowed the Sailfish to tie the game at one, and Maddie Bertisch drove in a run with a two-out infield single. The 'Fish broke the game open a couple batters later as Kaylee Winn crushed a double off the left-field fence as PBA took a 4-1 lead. The 'Fish took a 6-1 lead as Maddie Biggs hit a two-run double down the third-base line, and the seventh run of the inning came courtesy of a Kaley Hinds RBI single to center field.
Busby was in control all afternoon, as she allowed just five hits and no earned runs in a complete-game victory. The sophomore struck out four batters on the day and walked just one.
Bertisch went 3-for-4 on the day, as Winn and Guerra added two hits each in the game. West, Bertisch, and Winn all picked up stolen bases in the game.
