MELBOURNE, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic softball took two games on Saturday at the FIT Invitational, as they used a late rally to knock off No. 3 ranked North Georgia in the opener and rolled past Flagler in the finale. The Sailfish improve to .500 on the season with the win and now sit at 9-9.
Game 1: Palm Beach Atlantic 6, No. 3 North Georgia 4
PBA got off to a slow start in the opener on Saturday, as UNG put of three runs in the top of the third. The 'Fish got one back in the bottom half as Hannah Carlton doubled to right-center field and came around to score on a Sarah Thomas single to left. UNG answered right back with a run of their own in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead.
The 'Fish cut into the lead in the fifth as Carlton reached via walk and came around to score on a Magnolia West line-drive single.
The sixth inning is where the Sailfish offense did their damage, as Janie McCloskey singled with one out and Kathryn Sutton walked to bring up the go-ahead run. Kaylee Winn pinch hit and worked a walk to load the bases, and Carlton greeted a new pitcher by ripping a line-drive single to center that plated McCloskey. Maddie Biggs kept things moving by tying the game with a sacrifice fly to center, and Winn scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. The 'Fish added an insurance run on a Thomas single that scored Carlton.
Abbey Busby finished out the game in the circle, as she picked up another complete-game victory, and improved to 7-4 on the season with the win. She allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits total in the win.
The 'Fish picked up nine hits in total, as West, Thomas, and Carlton all had two-hit performances in the game.
Game 2: Palm Beach Atlantic 5, Flagler 0
The 'Fish picked up right where they left off against Flagler, as they took a 1-0 lead in the second as McCloskey came around to score on a Saint error.
Katherine Budnovich held the Saints scoreless as the 'Fish led 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth before the offense erupted. Budnovich led off in fourth with a single, and Carlton worked a walk to reach as well. Winn stepped up and clobbered a triple to right center, plating both runners and extending the Sailfish lead to 3-0. Bertisch singled in another run with two outs, and scored herself on another Biggs sacrifice fly.
Budnovich completed a two-hit shutout in the game, picking up her second win of the season. The freshman struck out four and walked three in total.
Bertisch finished 2-for-2 for the 'Fish who collected seven hits in the game.
PBA will close out play at the USSSA Space Coast Complex with a 10 a.m. game with Converse College tomorrow morning.
