Men's Tennis Suffer Setback Against Florida Southern

LAKELAND, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic men's tennis was upset on Saturday by Florida Southern by a final count of 5-2. The 'Fish were fresh off their highest ranking in program history, entering the match at No. 12 in the latest ITA Top-25.

PBA (1-1, 0-1 SSC) dropped the doubles point as the Mocs took No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. The 'Fish were able to win at No. 1 as Philipp Hoffmann and Pietro de Silva defeated Brandon Pham and Oscar Sohl 7-6 (5). Umberto Rosi and Carlos Niemeyer were nearly able to give the 'Fish the doubles point but the duo lost 7-5 to Valentin Hertweck and Victor Ahlbeck.

Heading into singles play the Sailfish needed to win four of the six matches to secure the team victory. Rosi fell in three sets 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 as the first match to come off the court which meant the 'Fish needed to win four of the final five singles matches. After de Silva defeated Ahlbeck in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 the Sailfish trailed 2-1.

Hoffmann was victorious at No. 1 singles with a 7-6 (5), 6-4 win over Hertweck to even the match at 2-2. The Sailfish needed to win two of the final three singles matches as all of them entered the third set. The Mocs were able to prevail in all three as the Sailfish ran out of gas. Thomas Salmon, Rodolfo Hasegawa and Niemeyer were able to get PBA into the third set but were unable to come away with the victory.

The Sailfish will have a tight turnaround as they battle Rose-Hulman in Orlando on Monday at 5 p.m.
