WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic softball split a doubleheader with No. 5 Saint Leo on Saturday afternoon, as the 'Fish dropped game one 5-1 before bouncing back to take the series finale 2-0. The Sailfish now sit 5-6 on the season and 1-2 in SSC play as the Lions are 7-7 overall and 2-1 in league play.
Game 1: No. 5 Saint Leo 5, No. 18 Palm Beach Atlantic 1
The Sailfish struck first in the game as Hannah Carlton singled up the middle with one out and stole second. After a Hayley Haas walk, Magnolia West hit a hard ground ball at the second baseman that was misplayed and allowed Carlton to score the game's first run.
The Lions tied the game with a run in the top of the third and busted the game open with four runs in the fifth inning.
Both offenses struggled to get much going as the Sailfish finished the game with five hits and the Lions finished with just four. Katherine Budnovich was the only Sailfish player with multiple hits in the game as the freshman finished 2-for-4.
Game 2: No. 18 Palm Beach Atlantic 2, No. 5 Saint Leo 0
Abbey Busby and Auria Mounts were locked in a pitcher's duel in the series finale as both pitchers had shutouts going into the bottom of the fifth.
Edmilly Molina led off the fifth with a double to deep left-center field and Maddie Biggs followed with a walk. After a strikeout, a wild pitch allowed the runners to advance a base and Molina came around to score on an RBI groundout from West.
The Sailfish tacked on an insurance run in the sixth inning as Budnovich and Maddie Bertisch singled and after a Lion error Kaylee Winn worked a bases-loaded walk to plate the second run for the 'Fish.
The two runs were all Busby needed, as the sophomore allowed seven hits and didn't issue a single walk while striking out three in her first complete-game shutout of the season.
The Sailfish will return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 19 as they will head down to Barry for the first game of a three-game set.
