WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic men's tennis proved their No. 19 preseason ranking in their season opener on Sunday, knocking off No. 6 Flagler 4-3. This year in collegiate tennis the three doubles matches are a best two-out-of-three format to award one point with all six singles matches worth one point for a total of seven.
The Sailfish earned the doubles point when Rodolfo Hasegawa and Thomas Salmon prevailed at No. 2 7-6 (5) over Felipe Carvalho and Rasums Jonsson. PBA also was victorious at No. 3 doubles as Umberto Rosi and Carlos Niemeyer won 6-3 over Luca Bolla and Daniel Arrien.
Heading to singles action the 'Fish needed to take three of the six matches. After taking No. 3 (Pietro de Silva) and No. 6 (Niemeyer) in straight sets the 'Fish just needed a win at No. 2 or No. 5 to secure the upset. At No. 5 Salmon fell behind 6-4 before forcing a third set with a 6-1 win in the second over Konstantin Dustmann. In the third Dustmann went ahead 4-1 and went on to win 6-4.
The match came down to No. 2 with Phillipp Hoffmann taking on Jonsson. Hoffmann won the first set 6-3 before Jonsson took the second by the same score. In the third Hoffmann pulled away late to win 6-4 and give PBA their first win of the season.
PBA is back in action on Wednesday as they host No. 2 Barry in their SSC opener at 3 p.m.
