Volleyball Tripped up Against Eagles

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball team lost a competitive match at home against Embry-Riddle on Saturday.

The Sailfish attempted to carry their momentum from yesterday's win into today's match against ERAU (19-4, 12-4 Sunshine State Conference) who was ranked No. 3 in the region entering the match. PBA (15-12, 7-9 SSC) was close in each set, but the 'Fish lost the match to the Eagles 3-1 despite outhitting visitor.201-.179 in the match.

PBA started off strong in the first set, getting out to an early lead. The Sailfish started the set with a sizeable 12-6 lead, but ERAU responded with a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to one. PBA could only hold off the Eagles for so long before the Blue and Gold finally gained a lead of its own, leading 21-20. ERAU scored five of the last eight points in the set to earn a 25-23 win.

The Sailfish were forced to dig out of a hole after falling behind early in the second set. PBA trailed 14-4 to start the set as ERAU took control. The Sailfish clawed their way back as a 9-1 run, including three kills from Amber Rowoldt, made it a 15-13. Unfortunately for PBA, the comeback was cut short as the Eagles responded with a 10-4 run to win 25-17 and take a 2-0 lead.

PBA was able to avoid being swept as the Sailfish earned a win in a hard-fought third set. After the Eagles got out to a 14-10 lead, the 'Fish rallied to make the score 18-16. A 7-1 run by PBA, with two kills from Jordan Rush gave the Sailfish a 23-19 advantage. Rush totaled six kills in the set as the freshman got the last two points of the set in the 25-22 PBA win.

The Sailfish continued to show tons of fight in the competitive fourth set. PBA led 15-12 early in the set as the Sailfish tried to stay alive. The turning point came midway through the match with the hosts leading 16-13 ERAU went on a 9-1 run to take a 22-17 lead. PBA tried to recover, cutting the deficit down to two points, but the Eagles won the set 25-22 to clinch the match.

It was another day, another triple-double for Jazz Schmidt who led PBA with 15 kills, 26 assists while totaling 18 digs. Sam Wolf was right behind her with 12 kills and Rowoldt finished with 11 kills while hitting .474. Lilly Turner added 21 digs and Carly Middleton finished with 16 digs of her own.
