Volleyball Wins Nail-Biter at Rollins

WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball team played a dramatic match on the road against Rollins on Saturday that pushed the Sailfish to the limit.

With its regional hopes in the balance, PBA (16-12, 8-9 Sunshine State Conference) was able to bounce back from a 2-0 deficit and defeat the Tars in five sets thanks in large part to Caroline Swan who stepped up to lead the 'Fish with a career-high 15 kills in the match. The Sailfish outhit Rollins (8-21, 3-15 SSC) .224-.158 in the match after a sloppy first two sets.

The Tars got off to a strong start in the match. A 10-3 run in the middle of the first set gave Rollins an 18-11 advantage. With the hosts leading 23-16, PBA made a 3-0 to stay alive with kills from Sam Wolf and Jazz Schmidt. Unfortunately for the Sailfish, Rollins took the set 25-19.

PBA's struggles hit their peak in the second set. With the set tied at seven, a 12-2 run made it 18-9 Tars. The Sailfish could not recover, hitting just .029 in the set. Rollins took a 2-0 lead by winning the second set 25-15.

The Sailfish recouped with possibly their best set of the season in the third set. PBA dominated, hitting .417 in the set. A 9-1 run gave PBA a 15-7 lead, and another 9-1 run at the end of the set sealed a 25-11 set win for the 'Fish. The duo of Swan and Wolf accounted for five kills each in the set.

Set number four was a tightly contested affair. It seemed as if the Sailfish were going to force a fifth set as they led the Tars 19-14 after a 4-1 run thanks to kills from Swan, Lilly Turner and Jordan Rush. Rollins fought back with a 6-1 run to tie the set at 20. The Tars took a 22-21 lead down the stretch, but PBA ended the set with another 4-1 run with a kill from Swan putting the exclamation point on a 25-23 set win.

The fifth set was all PBA as the Sailfish came out of the set break firing on all cylinders. The visitors took the first three points of the set. With the score 4-2, the Sailfish went on a 6-1 run with three kills by Schmidt to lead 10-3. PBA ended the set with a 5-2 run capped off by a Swan kill to win the set 15-5 and the match 3-2.

Swan hit .343 for the match on 35 attacks, Amber Rowoldt added 14 kills to the PBA cause, hitting .360 and adding seven digs. Schmidt finished with a double-double consisting of 20 assists and 10 kills. Emma Pieper totaled a double-double of her own with 25 assists and 13 digs while Turner finished with 16 digs.

The Sailfish return home on Tuesday to play Barry in an important SSC matchup. The match in Miami Shores, Fla. takes place at 7 p.m.
