Wolf Leads PBA to Upset over #24 Barry

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball team came from behind to pull off the upset against No. 24 Barry at the Rubin Arena on Tuesday night.

After having a slow start, PBA recomposed and bounced back to defeat Barry 3-1. The Sailfish outhit the Buccaneers .283-.176 in the victory which snapped Barry's five-game win streak. Freshman Sam Wolf led PBA with 19 kills, just one short of tying her career-high.

PBA Head Coach Doug Walters was proud of his team's performance. "Huge win for our team tonight. We had all facets of the game operating at an efficient level, and scored a big W over a top team in the conference. We will be looking for that to propel us forward as we move into the next match on Friday."

The Sailfish began the match with a sloppy start to the first set. Barry got out to a 10-2 lead early in the set. PBA slowly worked its way back to make it a competitive set. The Sailfish cut the deficit to two after a 9-3 run made it 19-17; however, Barry held on to win the set 25-20.

PBA rebounded after its slow start in the second set. The Sailfish held a lead for the entire set as five kills each from Wolf and Jazz Schmidt kept them in control. Barry made a run to cut the PBA lead to one, but the Sailfish won the set 25-21.

The Buccaneers tried to stall the Sailfish momentum in the third set by getting out to a 7-3 advantage. The Sailfish responded with an 11-4 run which included two kills each from Wolf, Caroline Swan and Amber Rowoldt which gave PBA a 14-11. The 'Fish never looked back as a kill by Lyndzey Minter and an attack error from the visitors closed out a 25-19 set win for PBA.

Both teams seemed evenly match in the fourth set as they traded leads and exchanged long, intense rallies. Barry continued its trend of getting ahead early by starting the set with a 6-2 lead. Again, the resilient Sailfish answered with a run of their own to tie the set at nine. The Buccaneers did their best to prevent the Sailfish from taking the lead, but a 6-1 run by PBA gave the hosts a 20-17 advantage. Barry made the score 21-20, but the Sailfish ended the set with four straight points including kills from Wolf and Schmidt followed by an ace by Rowoldt to win the set 25-20 and clinch the match.

Schmidt and Rowoldt finished with 13 kills each, followed by Swan who tied a career-high with 12 kills of her own. Schmidt led the Sailfish with 25 assists, and Emma Pieper added 24 assists to the cause. Lilly Turner led with 18 digs including several clutch saves for the Sailfish.

PBA continues its homestand this Friday against Rollins. The match against the Tars starts at 7 p.m. at Rubin Arena.
