HOOVER, Ala. – The Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball team played its final game at the SSC/GSC Crossover on Saturday against the University of Alabama-Huntsville.
The Sailfish increased their winning streak to six games by defeating the Chargers in four sets. Today's win completed a 3-0 stint at the GSC Crossover for the Sailfish. PBA (12-7, 4-4 SSC) continued its strong defense that held UAH (14-6, 6-1 GSC) to a .047 hitting percentage in the match. Nine of the 31 Chargers' attack errors were courtesy of block from the Sailfish.
Amber Rowoldt led PBA with five blocks, while
Jazz Schmidt totaled four blocks of her own.
PBA started strong in the match. After losing the first point, the Sailfish did not trail the rest of the first set. A pair of 3-0 runs helped the 'Fish pull away as they led 16-8 midway through the set. UAH cut the deficit to three down the stretch, but the Sailfish took the first set 25-21 after a kill from
Caroline Swan. Rowoldt led the Sailfish with four kills in the set.
The Sailfish got out to another early led in the second set, taking advantage of several UAH attacking errors. A 5-0 run which included two Sailfish blocks and a kill from Rowoldt gave the Sailfish a 19-10 lead midway through the set. Just as it seemed like PBA was going to cruise to an easy set win, the UAH came charging back. With the Chargers facing match point trailing 24-17, UAH ripped off a 5-0 run to cut the PBA lead to three. Unfortunately for the Chargers, PBA won the set 25-21 thanks to a UAH attack error.
UAH broke PBA's streak of 11 set wins by winning a tightly contested third set. Both teams struggled to pull away from the other as the set contained seven lead changes. With the Chargers leading 21-20, UAH finished the set by winning four of the last five points to earn a 25-21 victory of its own.
PBA regrouped early in the fourth set as a 9-1 run that included three services aces gave the Sailfish a 13-7 lead. Both teams traded 3-0 runs before UAH began to slowly make its comeback. With PBA leading 21-17, the Chargers scored three consecutive points to make it a one-point set; however, the Sailfish slammed the door with a pair of kills from
Sam Wolf, and kills from
Anna Gregerson and Schmidt to win the set 25-21, clinching the match for the Sailfish.
Wolf led the Sailfish with 10 kills. Swan was not far behind with nine kills of her own. Rowoldt added eight kills to the cause. Schmidt totaled 16 assists and
Emma Pieper finished with 15 assists as the pair split the setting responsibilities.
Lilly Turner recorded 24 digs which was her second-most in a match this season.
The Sailfish return home to continue their SSC schedule with a rematch against Lynn on Tuesday. The match at Rubin Arena begins at 7 p.m.
