HOOVER, Ala. – The Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball team traveled to Hoover, Ala. to compete in the SSC/GSC Crossover hosted by the Gulf South Conference.
PBA (11-7, 4-4 SSC) played two matches and got two sweeps on Friday. It started the day with a win against Auburn-Montgomery (9-9, 3-2 GSC) followed by another 3-0 victory against Valdosta State (11-11, 3-4 GSC). Today's wins increased PBA's winning streak to five games.
The Sailfish play their final game of the tournament tomorrow with a match against Alabama-Huntsville. The match at the Finley Center starts at 12:15 p.m. eastern time.
Palm Beach Atlantic 3, Auburn-Montgomery 0
The first match of the day saw the Sailfish holding the Warhawks to a .046 hitting percentage as AUM totaled 23 attacking errors, including 10 total blocks from PBA.
Anna Gregerson and
Amber Rowoldt led the Sailfish with four total blocks each.
After trailing early in the first set, PBA took a 13-9 lead thanks to a 8-1 run that included two kills from
Jazz Schmidt. The Sailfish stayed in control for the rest of the set. Kills from Rowoldt and
Caroline Swan clinched a 25-20 set win for the 'Fish.
PBA carried its momentum into the second set. A pair of kills from
Jordan Rush along with a kill from
Sam Wolf got the Sailfish off to a strong start. PBA led the entire set as it was able to hold off a 4-0 run from the Warhawks down the stretch to take the set 25-19. AUM hit just .028 in the set.
The 'Fish had to play from behind to start the third set. AUM held an 11-7 lead early in the set, but PBA remained within striking distance. The Sailfish slowly crawled their way back and began trading leads with the Warhawks. With the set tied at 21, the Sailfish went on a 4-1 run, including two kills from Swan, to win the set and the match.
Wolf led PBA's attack with 14 kills while hitting .367. Swan was the most efficient hitter for PBA, hitting .583 with eight kills. Schmidt had a match-high 22 assists and tallied nine kills. Rowoldt recorded eight kills while also leading the 'Fish with 13 digs.
Palm Beach Atlantic 3, Valdosta State 0
The Sailfish kept their momentum rolling in their match against Valdosta State. PBA continued to frustrate its opponent's attack as Valdosta only hit .089 in the match.
PBA pulled away from the Blazers midway through the first set. A 9-1 run, including three kills from Schmidt, gave the Sailfish a 14-9 lead. VSU attempted to claw its way back, cutting the deficit to just one as the set went down to the wire; however, the Sailfish won the set 25-21 after a 4-1 run.
The second set was a back and forth affair that included 10 lead changes as neither team could pull away from the other. PBA had its backs against the wall down the stretch as the Blazers led 24-23. A pair of kills from Wolf kept the Sailfish alive and gave them a 25-24 lead. VSU had two more chances to put the set away, but the 'Fish refused to concede. After trailing 28-27, PBA scored three straight points as kills from Schmidt and Swan put the exclamation points on a 30-28 set win.
Two large runs kept PBA in control in the third set. A 7-0 run gave the Sailfish a 13-7 lead early in the set. VSU cut the deficit to two, but the 'Fish ended the set on a 9-2 run to win the set 26-16 to seal the match.
Wolf led PBA again with 11 kills on a .345 hitting percentage. Swan continued operating at a high efficiency, hitting .600 with nine kills.
Lilly Turner totaled a team-high 15 digs in the match.
