Sailfish Volleyball Defeated For First Time in 2018

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – No. 3 ranked PBA volleyball suffered their first loss of the season on Friday, falling to No. 12 ranked Tampa in straight sets.  The Sailfish fall to 13-1 on the season with the loss while Tampa improves to 12-1 and remain the only team unbeaten in Sunshine State Conference play.

The Sailfish couldn't slow down the Spartan high-powered offense in the opening set, as Tampa hit .333 for the set and overcame a late comeback effort from the 'Fish to win the first set 25-21.  PBA hit a strong .250 in the set but just didn't have an answer for Tampa's offense.

The Sailfish defense improved in the second set, as they limited Tampa to .143 hitting, but couldn't win a big point late in the set as Tampa won the final two points and took the set 25-23.

The Sailfish looked like they would be able to extend the match to a fourth set, as they took a late 24-23 lead in the third set, but Tampa came through with three consecutive points to take the match in three sets.

Raegan Grooms had a solid match for the Sailfish in a losing effort, as the senior led the Sailfish with 13 kills.  Amber Rowoldt was the only other Sailfish player with double-digit kills, as she finished with 12 kills on the night.

Molly Burkhardt had 30 assists, 13 digs, and four kills for the 'Fish while Lilly Turner had eight digs and Ally Smith had seven.

The Sailfish will be back in action tomorrow, Sept. 22 at 4 p.m. as they will play host to Rollins College.
