WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic men's tennis won their third straight on Saturday, defeating Florida Southern 8-1 to improve to 12-6 on the season and 2-1 in the SSC.
The Sailfish swept the doubles matches with Pato Zarazua and Pietro de Silva cruising to an 8-0 victory in the second flight. Things were a little closer for Rodolfo Hasegawa and Thomas Salmon at No. 3 as the duo won 8-5. In the top position Philipp Hoffmann and Bernardo Ferreira were pushed to the brink but survived to win 9-8 (5) to put the 'Fish in great position heading into singles play.
Carlos Niemeyer was the only player to have a dominant match, defeating Blaine Miller at No. 6 by a score of 6-2, 6-1. Zarazua and Hoffmann were both straight sets winners at the top of the lineup as Zarazua won 7-6 (5), 6-2 and Hoffmann getting the win 6-4, 7-6 (3).
In the middle of the lineup it was Hasegawa and de Silva who were able to pick up victories, both in three sets. Hasegawa took the first 6-3 from Victor Ahlbeck but Ahlbeck recovered to win the second 6-4. In the third it was Hasegawa who came away with a 6-1 victory to secure the match. De Silva took the first set at No. 4 6-1 but dropped the second 6-4 to Tim Becker. In the third de Silva was leading 3-2 when Becker was forced to retire.
The Sailfish are back in action on Wednesday as they make the trip to Barry. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
