BOCA RATON, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic men's basketball's comeback attempt fell a bit short on Wednesday night, as the Sailfish trailed by as many as 16, but fought back hard in the second half, falling to Lynn University by an 87-82 final score. The Sailfish fall to 12-14 on the season and 6-9 in SSC play as the 'Fish are now tied with Florida Tech for the eighth spot in the standings. Lynn improves to 12-10 on the year and 9-7 in league play.
Lynn's offense began the night red hot, as the Fighting Knights scored 47 first-half points, and shot over 56 percent from the field. The Sailfish defense struggled mightily in the half, allowing the Knights to make 10-of-14 attempts from long range.
The Sailfish received a nice offensive performance from Michael Stones in the first half, as the junior scored 11 points in the opening period, making 4-of-5 shots from the floor. The Sailfish scoring was spread out in the half, as nine players made field goals for the 'Fish.
The 'Fish played much better in the second half, as a De'Ondre Jackson three-pointer cut Lynn's large lead all the way down to two with just over four minutes to play. Lynn made clutch free throws down the stretch and picked up a couple key offensive rebounds to put the Sailfish away.
Grant Gullett led the Sailfish in scoring on the night, as he finished with 17 points and also picked up 14 rebounds in the game for a double-double. Jules Jasmin scored 16 points for the 'Fish, while Stones and Marshall Riddle joined them in double-figures with 11 points each. Jackson uncharacteristically struggled from long range on the night, but still finished with nine points and four rebounds off the bench.
The Sailfish will return to action on Saturday afternoon, as they will take on Rollins College in another key SSC matchup. Tip is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Winter Park.
