ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic baseball picked up the first Sunshine State Conference victory in program history Friday night, defeating Eckerd College by a 7-1 final score at the Turley Complex. The Sailfish have now won four of their last five games, and sit at 7-5 on the season. Eckerd has now lost two games in a row, and falls to 5-4 on the year.
The Tritons struck first off Sailfish starter Mikhail Cazenave, as two weakly-hit singles led to a first inning run for Eckerd. Those two hits were the only two Cazenave surrendered all night however, as he dominated the Triton lineup for seven innings, allowing just one run and striking out seven. The senior picked up the win to improve to 3-2 on the season.
The Sailfish tied the game in the second inning, as Bobby Brennan walked with the bases loaded, scoring Evan Dougherty who also reached via walk. The 'Fish took a lead in the third inning as Dougherty singled to center to plate Eddie Vicinanza who walked and stole a base.
Dougherty was back at it in the fifth inning, as he gave the 'Fish a little bit of breathing room with a two-out, two-strike single to center field which plated two runs and gave PBA a 4-1 lead.
The Sailfish put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh, as Riley Herold blasted a three-run homer over the right field fence, and put the 'Fish ahead 7-1.
Tyler Hawks and Justin Hernandez threw scoreless innings to close out the game for the Sailfish.
Dougherty reached base safely all five plate appearances on Friday, as the senior went 3-for-3 with two walks, two runs, and three RBIs. Herold also drove in three runs with his 2-for-4 day at the plate and his fourth homer of the season.
The Sailfish will return to play tomorrow, Feb. 24 with a doubleheader against Eckerd College beginning at noon.
