Sailfish Win At Nova, Secure Spot in SSC Tourney

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – For the first time in the Division II era, the Palm Beach Atlantic men's basketball team left Rick Case Arena on the campus of Nova Southeastern with a victory as the Sailfish defeated the Sharks 97-92 in overtime Wednesday night.

For the first 20 minutes and again at 40 minutes the Sailfish (15-15, 9-10 SSC) and Sharks (17-8, 11-8 SSC) were deadlocked. The teams went into halftime tied 48-48 and ended regulation tied 85-85 but in the overtime session the 'Fish were able to outscore NSU 12-7.

After falling behind by four early in the overtime period the 'Fish used a 7-0 run to take a 93-90 lead on a bucket by Grant Gullett with 41 seconds left. After NSU answered with a basket of their own, PBA secured the win at the free throw line. De'Ondre Jackson hit the first two with 19 seconds left then after a Sharks missed 3-pointer, Lucas Morales connected on two at the free throw line with two seconds left to secure the win.

Jackson led the team with 25 points on 10-of-19 shooting. He hit 3-of-4 from long range and also pulled down eight rebounds and blocking three shots. Not to be outdone, Gullett added 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting and also recorded a double-double with 11 boards.

Michael Stones added 13 points, eight assists and five rebounds while Marshall Riddle added 14 points as the senior hit on 3-of-7 from deep.

PBA finished the game shooting 52 percent overall and made 7-of-16 from long range. NSU shot 44 percent overall but struggled from deep, making just 9-of-30.

The 'Fish secured a spot in the Sunshine State Conference Tournament with the win and currently sit in seventh place with the possibility to move up to sixth with a win Saturday and a loss by Rollins on Saturday at Saint Leo.

PBA will close out the regular season on Saturday at home against Eckerd at 4 p.m. The SSC Tournament will begin on Feb. 28 with the top four seeds each hosting a first round game. The semifinals and finals will be held at Florida Southern March 3-4.
