Gullett Leads 'Fish Past Spartans

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic men's basketball needed extra time to take down Tampa on Wednesday night as the 'Fish finally prevailed 103-93.

Grant Gullett was the star on the night for PBA (14-14, 8-9 SSC) as the senior flirted with a triple double, finishing with team-highs of 24 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. Gullett shot 10-of-15 from the floor in the game.

The Sailfish finished with three players scoring 20 points and a fourth finishing with 19. Marshall Riddle scored 22 as the senior knocked down 5-of-9 from long range and made 7-of-8 at the free throw line. He had plenty of chances at the charity stripe as Tampa was called for four technical fouls in the game including two on the head coach.

De'Ondre Jackson came off the bench to score 20 points including six in overtime as the 'Fish raced out to a lead and never looked back. Riddle and Dakota Zinser connected on treys on back-to-back possessions around the two minute mark as the Sailfish started to pull away. A dunk by Michael Stones put the game away with 35 seconds to play as PBA went 6-of-6 at the line down the stretch to ice it.

PBA let a 10 point lead with nearly eight minutes left in the second half dwindle away. Tampa's Mekhi Biffle made a basket with six seconds left to tie the game at 83-83 and a last second heave by the 'Fish went awry.

The 'Fish led by four after the first half and built their lead early in the second half thanks to technicals called against Tampa. Two were called in succession leading eventually to the ejection of the Tampa head coach with 17:35 left. Riddle knocked down all four free throws to cap off an 11-0 run in 70 seconds that broke open a 39-39 tie.

Both teams shot the ball extremely well from the floor as PBA finished at 58 percent and Tampa at 55 percent. The 'Fish connected on 9-of-19 from long range while the Spartans hit on 13-of-27 from deep.

PBA will close out the season with two of their final three at home starting with a game Saturday against Florida Tech at 4 p.m.

The 'Fish close the night in a tie for seventh in the SSC standings with the top eight teams earning a place in the SSC Tournament.
