CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The men's basketball team couldn't hold on late as they fell to the West Georgia Wolves in the first game of the season. After trailing for the majority of the game the Wolves came alive late and ended up on top with a final score of 80-72.
The Sailfish (0-1) jumped out to the early lead in the first few minutes of the game. The lead was maintained in the first half of the game despite a late half run by the Wolves. The 'Fish were able to add a few more points before heading into the locker room to give them a five point lead at half time.
The Sailfish continued to stay ahead in the early parts of the second half. With 16 minutes left in the second half PBA extended their lead to eight points on a layup by Jules Jasmin who would go on to finish with 22 points. It was with about 13 minutes remaining in the game when the Wolves started to turn the tides thanks to Marquill Smith who would lead West Georgia with 28 points, six rebounds, and five steals.
Michael Stones put PBA up two with a layup at the seven minute remaining mark followed by another layup from Jasmin to give the 'Fish their last lead of the night. The Sailfish fought for the lead but the Wolves eventually pulled away, winding up with an eight point victory.
Jasmin would lead the 'Fish with 25 points on 8-14 from the field and adding six points from the line. The Sailfish shot 42.6 percent while going 3-18 from the 3-point line. Andrew Moemeka shined in his first game as a Sailfish putting up 15 points and six rebounds of his own while shooting 75 percent on the night.
In addition, Matthew Johnson and Bakari Warthen both added eight points apiece to the Sailfish offense with Warthen snagging five rebounds of his own. De'Ondre Jackson and Paxton Wilson each added six points to the score board as well.
PBA returns to the court on Saturday as they take on the host, Lee, at 4pm in their final game up in Tennessee.
