CLEVELAND, Tenn. – Palm Beach Atlantic took the lead with under 10 seconds left in the game and were able to hold on to defeat Lee 86-82. The Sailfish improve to 1-1 on the early season while Lee falls to 1-1 on Saturday night.
The game got off to a slow start for both teams before PBA jumped out to take a lead thanks to a De'Ondre Jackson jumper that he shortly followed up with a three on the next possession. Malek Barber extended the lead to six with a strong layup in the paint with nine minutes left to play in the first half.
The Flames gained the lead with back to back three pointers from Quay Kennedy and Michael McGuirk who would finish the night with 26 points and 9 boards. The 'Fish and the Flames continued to exchange buckets before the score settled at 39-36 at the half.
The second half continued much like the end of the first half with each team exchanging shots but the Flames maintaining a lead. Andrew Moemeka put the Sailfish within three on a put back dunk before making a layup to give PBA the one point lead.
The Flames eventually retook the lead and extended it to seven points on a three ball from Cody Jones. The Sailfish would then go on a seven point run to tie the game on two free throws from Paxton Wilson with under two minutes to go. After some strong defense Jules Jasmin made a layup in the paint to give the Sailfish a two point lead with eight seconds to go. PBA would then create a turnover to clinch the game.
The Sailfish shot 45 percent from the field and 20 percent from the three. The offense was led by Moemeka and Jackson who each put up 16 points. Moemeka and Barber led the 'Fish with a combined 20 rebounds. Jules Jasmin had another strong performance giving the Sailfish 15 points, three rebounds, and two steals.
In addition, Wilson added 11 points, going 6-6 from the free throw line. Casey Carpinello had four points and four rebounds in his 17 minutes and Michael Stones had five points and two rebounds.
The Sailfish will return to the court on Nov. 17 to take on University of Queens Charlotte at 2 p.m. at the Rubin Arena for their home opener.
