ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball wrapped up their regular season with a thrilling, five-set victory over Eckerd College as the 'Fish took down the Tritons after being down match point in the fifth set. The 'Fish complete their regular season with a 27-4 record and a 16-4 record in SSC play.
The Sailfish dropped the opening set on Saturday, as they struggled to get anything going offensively and dropped the opener 25-18. The Tritons made just one attacking error in the set.
The Sailfish were down early again in the second set and trailed 18-13 late in the set. The 'Fish then went on a late run fueled by multiple kills from freshman Amber Rowoldt and tied the set at 23 before back-to-back kills from Sophie Hoekstra gave the Sailfish the set to tie up the match.
The third set was back and forth throughout, as the Sailfish and Tritons were tied many times including at 25-25. The 'Fish then got a kill from Maddie Span and a block from the combo of Span and Hoekstra to take the set 27-25.
The Tritons stormed back to win the fourth set and tie the match at two as they held the 'Fish to a .067 hitting clip and allowed the Sailfish to record just one block in the set. The 'Fish made a late run but dropped the set 25-20.
In the fifth and final set, PBA got out to a quick 3-0 lead, forcing the Tritons to call an early timeout. Eckerd stormed back to tie the final set at nine before back-to-back kills from Rowoldt gave the Sailfish an 11-9 lead. The Tritons had match point at 15-14 before an attacking error allowed the 'Fish to tie it up at 15. A block by Molly Burkhardt and Span gave the 'Fish a lead and a Rowoldt kill gave the 'Fish a five-set win.
Rowoldt led the way with a 22-kill performance, as she hit .340 in the match. Ally Rohn came up big as well, as the senior finished with 17 kills and 22 digs on the day. Lilly Turner had a career-high 41 digs in the match, and Burkhardt finished with 51 assists and 21 digs to go with seven blocks.
Span finished with six kills and seven blocks, while Jennie Anderson had eight kills and six blocks in the season finale. Hoekstra added nine kills.
Abbie O'Ferrel had a strong finish to her season for the Tritons with a 23 kill, 23 dig performance.
The Sailfish will now await their seed for the NCAA Tournament, which will be announced at 10 p.m. on tomorrow, Sunday, Nov. 11. A broadcast of the selection show is available on ncaa.com.
