WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Marshall Riddle set the Palm Beach Atlantic men's basketball 3-point record as the Sailfish knocked off No. 20/25 Barry University on Wednesday night, 87-74.
Riddle connected on 9-of-19 from long range as he scored a season-high 33 points against the Buccaneers. The senior made his first triple with 11:47 to play in the first half and the Sailfish trailing by 10 points. A personal 9-0 brought PBA within a point a minute later and another triple with 9:26 to play in the half capped off the impressive first half.
Despite that effort the Sailfish (12-13, 6-8 SSC) still trailed the Bucs (13-5, 9-4 SSC) with four minutes to play in the half. The 'Fish used a 10-0 run to close the half, thanks in part to two technical free throws from Riddle and capped off with a dunk from Bakari Warthen just before the first half buzzer to take a 41-39 lead into the break.
PBA never trailed in the second half after starting the half with two more free throws from Riddle after Barry was called for a technical at the end of the first half. Riddle hit five more triples in the second half, spacing them out a little more than in the first half. His first one came with 15:10 left and added another with 13:48 to go. He hit two more on back-to-back posessions with six minutes to play before adding his final one with 2:49 to play to put the 'Fish up by 15.
Warthen and Grant Gullett joined Riddle in double figures with Warthen scoring 14 and Gullett adding 13. Jules Jasmin scored all nine points and pulled down all nine rebounds in the second half while Michael Stones had an impressive all-around performance. The junior scored seven points, pulled down five boards and collected a team-high six assists.
The Sailfish shot 44 percent from the floor while holding the Bucs to 37 percent. Barry was just 9-of-35 from long range while PBA hit on 13-of-29 from deep.
Riddle's nine 3-pointers sets the PBA Division II era record, previously set at eight and most recently accomplished during the 2015-16 season by Michael Simpson. Riddle's 33 points is also the first 30-point game by a Sailfish player since February 2015 and is the third highest single game total during the DII era.
The Sailfish will get the weekend off before heading to Lynn on Feb. 7 for a rematch with the Fighting Knights. Lynn beat the 'Fish in the first meeting this season 75-73.
