WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – A back-and-forth contest between Palm Beach Atlantic and Nova Southeastern on Wednesday night eventually turned out unfavorable for the Sailfish. The Sharks scored the final six points, all at the free throw line to pick up the win in the first of two meetings between the teams this season.
The Sailfish (10-11, 4-6 SSC) trailed most of the first half until a late 10-1 run put PBA on top 48-45 at the break. Marshall Riddle scored six of his 11 points in the run, connecting two of his three 3-pointers in the run. PBA pushed their lead out to nine early in the second half as Dakota Zinser connected on a triple.
The 'Fish led until just under 12 minutes to play as the Sharks finished off a six-point spurt to take control. The teams traded leads four times down the stretch and were tied four other times. One of those ties came at 86-86 as Grant Gullett converted a three-point play to even the score. Under a minute to go it was Zinser knocking down another trey to tie things up at 89-89.
From there things went south for the Sailfish. A foul followed by a technical gave the Sharks (12-4, 6-4 SSC) four free throws which they converted to take a 93-89 lead. Two more free throws after a missed 3-pointer ended any chance for a Sailfish comeback.
Zinser led the 'Fish with 23 points on 9-of-15 shooting. The Sailfish shot 51.5 percent from the floor including 10-of-27 from long range. The Sharks were equally as impressive shooting the ball, making 53.2 percent overall and 11-of-25 from long range.
In addition to Zinser, Gullett added 14 points and four rebounds while Jules Jasmin and Riddle each finished with 11 points. Jasmin and Lucas Morales led the way with seven rebounds each as the 'Fish outrebounded the sharks 33-30.
The Sailfish and Sharks will play again later this season in Fort Lauderdale on Feb. 21.
PBA returns to the court on Saturday as they travel across the state to take on the Lions of Saint Leo on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
