WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – After a 19-0 start the Palm Beach Atlantic men's basketball team held off a second-half charge to beat Tuskegee 78-69 on Tuesday afternoon.
The Sailfish even up their record at 8-8 on the year while the Golden Tigers fall to 1-10. The Sailfish will have an extended break before jumping back into conference play at the end of the month.
Tuskegee missed their first 12 shots from the floor and turned the ball over 13 times before Jaylan Shelton was credited with a field goal on a goaltending call with 6:36 to play in the first half. Before that time the Sailfish had taken a 22-1 lead. The Golden Tigers finished the half strong, outscoring the Sailfish 17-13 but still shot just 20.8 percent from the floor in the half. PBA shot 48 percent in the first half with De'Ondre Jackson scoring seven of his 11 before the break.
The second half was a much different story as Tuskegee outscored PBA 51-43 after combining for just 53 points in the first half. The Golden Tigers closed the gap to 11 early in the second half but PBA used a 12-1 run to push the gap back out to 22 as Milos Kostic scored all eight of his points during the run. The Serbian hit a pair of triples and converted both free throw attempts.
PBA withstood another late run by Tuskegee after keeping the margin around 20 for most of the half. The Golden Tigers never got the margin under double digits until the final 15 seconds. PBA shot 47 percent in the game while Tuskegee shot 34 percent after connecting on 42 percent in the second half. Both teams made seven from long range.
In addition to Jackson's 11, Dakota Zinser scored 11 points as well for the Sailfish as 11 total players scored in the game. Bakari Warthen and Jules Jasmin each scored nine while Michael Stones added seven. Grant Gullett and Casey Carpinello each added six. Jasmin and Jackson led the team with three assists each. Warthen pulled down 10 rebounds to lead the team. Both teams spent plenty of time at the free throw line as PBA made 23-of-34 and Tuskegee 20-of-33.
The Sailfish will return to the court on Dec. 30 to take on Florida Tech at 4 p.m. in Melbourne.
