CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Palm Beach Atlantic men's basketball hung around all game but was unable to pull off the upset, falling to No. 2/7 Queens University of Charlotte 79-71 Saturday afternoon.
The 'Fish (7-8) had four players score in double figures with De'Ondre Jackson leading the way with 22 points. Jackson scored 13 in the second half but PBA was never able to overtake the Royals (10-0). Queens led throughout the second half but never pulled away until the final minute.
A fast break dunk by Jackson with 1:32 to play cut the deficit to three but the Royals scored seven straight down the stretch to push their lead to double digits for the first time in the game. PBA missed two 3's and had a turnover down the stretch while Queens made 5-of-6 free throws to prevent a PBA comeback.
PBA shot 53.8 percent in the game including a blistering 59 percent in the first half. The 'fish knocked down 6-of-15 from beyond the arc and 9-of-15 from the free throw line. Queens was equally as impressive shooting the ball, making 55.6 percent overall in the game as the home team shot 60 percent in the first half. The Royals knocked down 8-of-20 from long range in the game and 11-of-17 at the line.
Bakari Warthen added 14 points for the 'Fish in the game and led the team in rebounds with six. Grant Gullett added 12 points, four rebounds and three assists while Dakota Zinser added 11 points. Matthew Johnson led the team with five assists.
The Sailfish will return to Rubin Arena on Tuesday to take on Tuskegee at 2 p.m. before an extended break.
