Sailfish Fall in Season Opener to Lumberjacks

ANAHEIM, Calif. – Palm Beach Atlantic men's basketball was unable to start the season off with a victory, falling to Humboldt State 90-81 in the Disney Tip-Off Classic. The Sailfish will play two more games out in California before returning home.

Grant Gullett led the Sailfish with 23 points in 21 minutes of action but it wasn't enough for the Sailfish. PBA (0-1) struggled shooting the ball from beyond the arc, making just 2-of-15 attempts while at the same time allowing the Lumberjacks (1-0) to connect on 8-0f-21 3-point attempts.

The lead changed hands seven times in the first half and there were nine ties in the game, eight coming in the first half. The 'Fish took their largest lead midway through the first half as Marshall Riddle connected on a triple with 9:48 to go in the half. Riddle finished the game with nine points, one of three players to reach that number on the night.

In the final four minutes of the half the Lumberjacks outscored PBA 14-4 to take a 50-40 lead into halftime. In the second half the Sailfish scored the first seven points with Gullett scoring four on his own. HSU pushed the lead back to six before eventually taking a 69-61 lead with just over eight minutes to play.

Eight straight points by the 'Fish over the next two minutes – capped by a dunk from Gullett – brought the Sailfish all the way back to even with the Lumberjacks. Humboldt State responded from deep, hitting a three to end the run and another moments later saw HSU retake the lead at 77-72 with just over four minutes to play.

The Lumberjacks didn't allow the Sailfish to get back into the game down the stretch, hitting 9-of-11 from the free throw line to end any chance of a Sailfish comeback. HSU finished the game just 18-of-30 from the free throw line but made the ones they needed. PBA finished the game 17-26 at the line.

The Sailfish shot 47 percent overall from the floor while HSU finished at 57.1 percent. De'Ondre Jackson added 13 points off the bench while Bakari Warthen and Jules Jasmin matched Riddle with nine points each. Warthen led the team with eight rebounds. Milos Kostic and Matthew Johnson led the team with three assists each. The team had 15 assists on 31 made field goals.

PBA is back in action on Saturday as they take on Upper Iowa at 4:30 p.m. eastern in their second game in the Disney Tip-Off Classic.
